Miami Head Coach Al Golden Postgame Quotes

Nebraska vs. Miami
Saturday, Sept. 20, 2014
Memorial Stadium (Lincoln, Neb.)

On the penalties/chippiness towards end of the game
“I like the fact that it meant a lot to our guys, obviously we don’t want to lose our poise like that, especially when you are playing a classy program like Nebraska. So, I like the fact we stuck to it, the fact that they wanted to finish the game, but obviously the penalties—we can’t have them.”

On Ameer Abdullah
“Well he is a really good player, and we did not tackle him well enough. We did not get enough third-down stops, couple that with three turnovers on the other side, that makes it hard to win on the road. Again, he is an excellent back, we knew that coming in. I think (Tommy) Armstrong did enough obviously in the air, he hit (Kenny) Bell, for a couple of explosive plays.”

On how much longer the defensive scheme will still be used/obviously not working (Miami reporter)
“You open a game this year, where they have a total of 326 yards in the game, if you are talking about this whole season, we did not tackle well enough and we came up against a good back, and we turned the ball over three times. Look, there is no excuse for not tackling, there is no excuse for not doing better on third down. But we are not giving up on this team, we have made a lot of progress this year. We didn’t play well enough tonight, that is it, against a good team on the road. We turned the ball over three teams and we have a lot of selfish penalties.”

On Miami's quarterback play
"Brad (Kaaya) is going to be good. I don’t have any doubt about that. He has a great look on gamedays, he hung one up on the sideline that I know he would want back. Obviously, we had a turnover for a touchdown which was a back-breaker. I think Brad grew up a lot today. I think he has a chance to come away from the game and grow up and learn a lot and move forward as a quarterback."

On crowd noise
"Tough, it is tough, but that is college football there is no excuse. I thought we handled it well to be honest with you. The noise did not create the fumbles, the noise did not create interceptions, I don’t think that had anything to do with it. The noise did not impact how we tackled (Ameer) Abdullah tonight, and there is no excuse for that.”

On if he thought they had momentum before the scoop and score by Josh Mitchell
“I did, it was a three-point game and we had the ball around midfield. I did. I did think that. I felt that we were really moving the ball well there, obviously that was a tough one. Thought we had a chance to go up by four, if not tie it. We ended up going down by 10. Again, our guys are resilient, we just had too many turnovers to overcome on the road against a good team.”

On if this toughened up the team
“I just told them that. Again, two tough opponents on the road, and we did not play well enough to win. Especially the turnover column, it is tough to overcome that many turnovers. There is no doubt there will be a lot of people that grow from this. A lot of the guys played their tails off to be honest with you.”

On Duke Johnson fumbling, what he told him
“Just told him got to keep going. He did come back so again, that part is disappointing.”
