New Zealand Falls to Team USA

Lincoln – Husker sophomore guard Tai Webster and New Zealand got off to a quick start, but it was not enough as Team USA posted a 98-71 win Tuesday morning at the FIBA World Cup of Basketball.

Webster, who is beginning his sophomore season at Nebraska, started at point guard for New Zealand and had four points and a pair of blocked shots in a losing effort. Webster had all of his points in the first quarter, as New Zealand was within 27-20 after 10 minutes. From there, it was Team USA outscoring New Zealand, 30-15, in the second quarter to take a commanding halftime lead.

Webster has stated all three games for New Zealand in Spain and is averaging 4.3 points per game, while ranking second on the team in both assists (five) and steals (three). In addition, the 6-foot-4 guard has a team-high two blocked shots.

With a 0-3 record, New Zealand faces Ukraine on Wednesday (8 a.m.) and Finland on Thursday (8 a.m.) with the top four teams in each group advancing out of pool play. The final two pool play games will be on ESPNU.

Former Husker Jorge Brian Diaz and Puerto Rico are off today, but return to action Wednesday as they take on the Philippines at 6:30 a.m. and it is also available on the WatchESPN app.
