Nebraska Slips 5-2 To Drake In Tough Match

Lincoln, Neb. - The Nebraska women’s tennis team (5-4, 0-0 Big Ten) fell to Drake (6-2, 0-0 MVC) on Friday by a score of 5-2 at the Nebraska Tennis Center. The Huskers dropped the doubles point early, causing them to fight from behind. The Big Red weren’t able to muster enough push to bounce back and slipped in singles, ultimately leading to the team defeat.

The match started with doubles and Drake got the jump early by grabbing a win at the No. 2 position when Jordan Eggleston and Nell Boyed ousted Nebraska’s Izabella Zgierska and Maike Zeppernick 8-3. The Bulldogs grabbed the point at the No. 3 when Klavdija Rebol and Maddie Johnson toppled the Huskers’ Hannah Sulz and Lisa Andersson 8-5. The match at the No. 1 spot was at 7-4 in favor of the Big Red’s Maggy Lehmicke and Mary Hanna over DU’s Mariel Ante and Lea Kozulic when it was called and remained unfinished with the doubles point decided.

Despite the 1-0 disadvantage, Nebraska brought a point back in singles at the No. 5 when Zeppernick swept Drake’s Kozulic 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 5 to make the score 1-1. The Bulldogs took the lead again and pushed the score to 2-1 at the No. 3 spot when Johnson defeated NU’s Hanna 6-4, 6-2. The margin was extended to 3-1 at the No. 2 when DU’s Ante outpaced the Huskers’ Zgierska 6-1, 6-4.

The Huskers couldn’t rally to comeback and the Bulldogs secured the match 4-1 at the No. 6 position when Eggleston scorched NU’s Sulz 6-1, 6-2. Nebraska’s Lehmicke earned a victory at the No. 1 over Drake’s Rebol 7-6 (11-9), 6-1 after the match had been decided. The final spot at the No. 4 ended in a win for DU’s Boyd against NU’s Andersson by a score of 6-3, 1-6, 6-2.

Next up for the Huskers is a dual match against Colorado State on Sunday at 11 a.m.
