Urbana, Ill. - The most successful season in school history came to an end late Friday night, as the No. 16 Nebraska women’s tennis team fell to second-ranked North Carolina, 4-1, at the NCAA Women’s Tennis Championships in Urbana, Ill.
The Huskers, who were the No. 15 seed in the NCAA Tournament, fell to 24-6 on the season, as they reached the round of 16 for the first time in school history.
After dropping matches at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to lose the doubles point, the Huskers quickly tied the match at one apiece at No. 3 singles, where Stefanie Weinstein upset No. 39 Whitney Kay in straight sets with a 6-4, 6-1 victory. Unfortunately for the Huskers, that would be Nebraska’s only point of the match, as the Tar Heels (28-3) showed their depth, posting straight-set wins at No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles to cap a 4-1 win.
North Carolina will take on the winner of the Michigan/UCLA match, which was suspended late Friday evening.
