Huskers Drop Offensive Battle, 13-10

Lincoln – Nebraska’s offense scored 10 runs on 15 hits Wednesday night at Hawks Field, but it wasn’t enough, as the Kansas State Wildcats escaped Lincoln with a 13-10 victory. The loss dropped the Huskers one game below .500 on the season, 19-20, while the Wildcats picked up a season sweep of the Huskers after winning the first two games of the three-game season series in Manhattan earlier this year.

Nebraska’s pitching staff dug the Huskers into a 8-1 hole after the top of the second, but NU’s bats clawed back with eight unanswered runs to take a 9-8 lead into the sixth inning.

After Nebraska took the lead with a four-run fifth, the Wildcats responded with three runs in the top of the sixth on three hits to retake the lead, 11-9. KSU added two more runs in the top of the seventh, pushing its lead to four. The Huskers scored just once more on a two-out RBI single from Austin Darby in the eighth, and then went down in order in the ninth to end the game.

Nebraska’s first six hitters went a combined 12-for-25 on the night, including a 3-for-4 performance from Kash Kalkowski. The senior from Grand Island came up a home run shy of the cycle, as he singled in the third, roped a two-RBI triple in the fifth and hit a two-out double in the sixth. Four other Huskers produced multi-hit games, while Kalkowski, Rich Sanguinetti and Pat Kelly each had two RBIs.

Both teams burned through pitchers on the night, with the Huskers using nine arms, while the Wildcats used seven.

Jared King and RJ Santigate led the Wildcats with three hits and three RBIs each, with Jon Davis also driving in three runs.

Nebraska continues non-conference action this weekend at the TD Ameritrade Classic in Omaha. The Huskers will play four game in three days, starting with a 6:35 p.m. game on Friday against the Creighton Bluejays. Nebraska then meets the Oklahoma State Cowboys on Saturday for a doubleheader at 11 a.m., before wrapping up the weekend against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights on Sunday at 1:05 p.m.

There will be no TV or internet video this weekend of any game, but Greg Sharpe, Lane Grindle and Jeff Culhane will call all the action on the Husker Sports Network.
