After a slow start because of an elbow injury, freshman Shavon Shields has become an impact freshman for the Huskers. Shields is averaging 7.5 points and 4.9 rebounds per game, ranking third on the team in rebounding and fourth in scoring.
The 6-foot-6 freshman has hit his stride in recent games, reaching double figures in three of the Huskers' past five games, including a career-high 29 points at Penn State on Jan. 19. In that game, he hit 10 of 11 shots from the floor and came one point away from tying Nebraska's single-game freshman scoring record. He earned Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors on Jan. 21, as he averaged 23.0 ppg and 7.0 rpg against Purdue and Penn State.
The son of former Nebraska and Kansas City Chiefs great Will Shields, Shavon was a first-team all-state performer at Olathe Northwest (Kan.) High School last season, averaging 21.2 points, 8.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists per contest. He took a few minutes to answer our questions earlier this week.
