If you’re a Nebraska football fan headed south for the Huskers’ Capital One Bowl date against No. 6 Georgia, you have an ideal opportunity to become a part of history. The Nebraska Athletic Department and the Nebraska Alumni Association will co-host a pregame Husker Huddle in Orlando. The event will feature Nebraska Athletic Director Tom Osborne, who will speak for the last time as NU’s athletic director.
Tuesday, Jan. 1, will be Osborne’s last official day as a full-time Nebraska Athletic Department employee. He headlines an all-star lineup of speakers that also includes Chancellor Harvey Perlman, Husker legend Tommie Frazier and Nebraska Alumni Association Executive Director Diane Mendenhall. The event at McCracken Field, located just a few steps from the Florida Citrus Bowl Stadium, also includes the Cornhusker Marching Band and the NU Spirit Squad, plus Herbie Husker and Lil’ Red.
Huskers Athletic Fund (HAF) organizers said the 2½-hour event will begin at 9:30 a.m. EST and end at noon, one hour before the Huskers and Bulldogs kick off their nationally televised bowl game. The two college powers have played only once against each other with Nebraska scoring a 45-6 win in the 1969 Sun Bowl in El Paso.
“There’s something for everyone at this pep rally,” said HAF events coordinator Lindsey Freeman. “We have a disc jockey, kids’ games, face painting and more. Since this is an historic game, we’re serious about great prizes. One will be an official game ball from the Capital One Bowl, autographed by Coach Osborne and others. Anyone who pre-purchases a Husker Huddle pass will be registered for the drawing.”
Even though phone orders are no longer available, Freeman said Big Red fans can buy their pep really tickets online at Huskers.com until 5 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 28. A pass into the Husker Huddle would be a nice certificate to buy, print and put under the tree. It would also make a nice New Year’s gift. Cost is $65 per person for 21 years and older and includes all food and beverages. Under age 21 tickets are $50. Passes also can be purchased Jan. 1 at the Huddle entrance.
