Venice, Fla. - Former Nebraska women's golfer Madeleine Sheils advanced to the final Stage III qualifying at LPGA Q-School on Friday at the Plantation Golf and Country Club.
Sheils, a native of Boise, Idaho, finished the 139-player, 72-hole tournament in a tie for 50th at 293. The 2012 All-Big Ten performer as a Husker opened the tournament on Tuesday, Oct. 9 with a one-under-par 71, before adding a 73 on Wednesday. She battled her way to a 75 on Thursday before closing the tournament with a two-over-par 74 on Friday. She ended Stage II qualifying with a five-over-par 293 over four rounds on the 6,490-yard Bobcat Course.
Katie Burnett (Brunswick, Ga.) won Stage II qualifying with a sizzling 15-under-par 273 over four rounds. Melissa Reid (Derby, U.K.) finished six shots back at 279, while Kelly Jacques (Longmont, Colo.) took third at 280.
Sheils finished three strokes ahead of the final cut to advance to Q-School Stage III. The top 76 players from Stage II advanced into the final Qualifying Tournament Stage III, which will be contested over 90 holes Nov. 28-Dec. 2, on both the Champions and Legends courses at LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla. Top finishers in the final stage will earn 2012 LPGA membership (total number of cards TBD) and all others who make the cut will receive Symetra Tour status.
Sheils also produced a 293 over four rounds to tie for 53rd at Stage I qualifying at LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla., Sept. 4-7. Stage I began with nearly 250 players.
