Under the leadership of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee(SAAC), Husker student-athletes demonstrated their generosity through the support of the Food Bank of Lincoln Backpack Program. Student-athletes from all sports donated approximately 100 new and used backpacks that will be used to supply qualified students from area schools with food every Friday during the academic year. The food is intended to insure that the students have nourishment throughout the weekend until school meals resume each Monday. Additionally, Nebraska student-athletes from as many as ten different sports contributed $1,586.00 to the Backpack program which will fully fund nearly eight students for the entire academic calendar year.
At the October 8th, 2012 SAAC meeting, team representatives presented Food Bank of Lincoln Executive Director, Scott Young, with the donation who in turn applauded the student-athletes for their efforts. "Childhood hunger is a significant problem and has no boundaries. Your efforts and unselfishness are much appreciated as we continue to serve all of southeast Nebraska with this very important program."
SAAC President Neil Dufford was pleased to see the membership rally around such an important cause. "For the most part, student-athletes here at Nebraska have all of their needs met and experience good fortune. There are so many less fortunate, especially right here in our community, I'm proud that we were able to make a positive difference by rallying around such a worthwhile cause."
