Stillwater, Okla. - A nine-run first inning powered the Nebraska softball team to a 16-0 victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff in the first of two games Friday at the Mizuno Classic on the Oklahoma State campus.
The win was Nebraska's largest of the year, snapped a four-game losing streak and evened the Huskers' overall record at 11-11. NU produced a season high in runs and produced 15 hits. Four Huskers had multi-hit games, including a trio with three hits.
Senior Ashley Guile, junior Gabby Banda and sophomore Tatum Edwards each finished 3-for-4. Edwards finished a double shy of the cycle and produced five RBIs. Banda had a pair of doubles and an RBI, while Guile had three singles and an RBI. Junior Brooke Thomason added a pair of hits and two RBIs, while sophomore Taylor Edwards also had two RBIs. Overall, eight Huskers drove in at least one run in the win.
Nebraska exploded for nine runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Huskers sent 14 batters to the plate in the frame and recorded eight hits, including four doubles and one triple, with each of those extra-base hits coming in the first eight batters of the game. Banda and Taylor Edwards had back-to-back RBI doubles to open the scoring, before Tatum Edwards delivered a two-run triple.
Leading 4-0, junior Courtney Breault delivered an RBI single before Thomason ripped another RBI double to make it 6-0. Thomason went on to score on a double steal, before a sacrifice fly from Taylor Edwards and a two-out, RBI single from Guile closed out the nine-run inning.
After being held scoreless in the second, the Huskers added to their lead with four runs in the bottom of the third. Banda began the inning with her third hit and second double of the game. She scored on an RBI single from freshman Jordan Bettiol, before freshman Mattie Fowler worked a bases-loaded walk to score senior Kirby Wright, who had walked earlier in the inning. A two-out error then allowed the fourth run of the inning to score, as the Husker lead grew to 13-0.
Nebraska added to its lead again in the fourth, when Tatum Edwards blasted a 2-0 pitch over the wall in right center for a three-run homer.
Lost in the offensive explosion was a solid pitching performance from Nebraska. Senior right-hander Ashley Hagemann and classmate Haley Workman combined on a two-hit shutout. Workman (1-0) earned her first victory of the season, tossing the final 3.0 innings and allowing only a double and two walks. Hagemann worked the first 2.0 innings and struck out two while surrendering one walk and an infield single.
Heather Leigh (1-3) took the loss for UAPB, which fell to 2-15 on the year. Leigh did not record an out and was charged with five runs on four hits.
Nebraska returns to action later tonight against the host Oklahoma State Cowgirls.
