College Station, Texas - Senior right-hander Ashley Hagemann tossed a one-hit shutout to lead the 24th-ranked Nebraska softball team to a 2-0 victory over Houston in the first of two games Friday at the Texas A&M Invitational.
Hagemann allowed only a single and worked around five walks, striking out 10 to improve to 6-5 on the year. The Elkhorn, Neb., native posted her third double-digit strikeout of the season and tossed the sixth one-hitter of her career.
With Hagemann dominating in the circle, Nebraska relied on a pair of solo home runs for its offense. The Huskers were held to just four hits, but two of those hits left the park. Freshman Mattie Fowler led off the bottom of the third with a solo home run and sophomore Tatum Edwards added a solo home run of her own with two outs in the bottom of the sixth. Fowler also singled, finishing 2-for-2, while senior Ashley Guile added Nebraska's fourth hit.
Houston's only hit came with one out in the top of the third, when Marissa Rodriguez blooped a single to shallow left.
Hagemann's effort and the home runs helped Nebraska snap a two-game losing streak and improve to 10-7 on the year. Ty'Ara Law took the loss for Houston (9-7), allowing one run on three hits in 4.0 innings.
The Cougars did strand seven in the loss, but only one base runner reached third base on the day. Hagemann allowed two base runners in the same inning only twice, including the top of the seventh. A one-out and two-out walk put Cougars on first and second, before Hagemann closed out the shutout by getting Ashleigh Jones to ground out to end the game.
The Huskers close Friday play at the Texas A&M Invitational by taking on the host Aggies, who own the nation's longest home winning streak at 32 straight victories.
