Huskers Run-Rule Rams

Las Cruces, N.M. - The 22nd-ranked Nebraska softball team scored six runs in the sixth inning to snap a three-game losing streak with a 10-2, six-inning win over Colorado State in the first of two games Friday at the NMSU Softball Complex.

Nebraska (4-3) sent nine batters to the plate in the sixth, wrapping up the run-rule victory on a walk-off, two-run single from junior Brooke Thomason. The Edwards twins played a pivotal role in the win. Both twins went 3-for-4 in the victory, with Taylor homering, producing four RBIs and scoring three times and Tatum adding two RBIs of her own. Thomason went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, while senior Ashley Guile, the reigning Big Ten Player of the Week, was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Tatum Edwards (3-1) also earned the win in the circle, allowing a pair of unearned runs on just three hits in 4.0 innings. Senior right-hander Ashley Hagemann earned her first save of the season, tossing 2.0 scoreless innings, allowing only one hit and striking out five.

Molly Randle (0-2) took the loss for Colorado State, which fell to 2-5 on the season. Randle allowed 10 runs (nine earned) on 12 hits in 5.1 innings.

After Colorado State stranded a pair of runners in the top of the first, Nebraska jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the frame. Senior Gabby Banda reached on a one-out single that was followed by another single from Taylor Edwards. A ground out from Guile moved both runners into scoring position, before Tatum Edwards delivered a two-out, two-run single to center.

In the third, Banda walked to begin the inning before Taylor Edwards lined a 3-2 pitch off the foul pole in left for a two-run homer that pushed the lead to 4-0.

Colorado State cut the lead in the half with the help of a Husker error in the top of the fourth. After the first two batters were retired, a two-out single and an error extended the inning. Haley David then made Nebraska pay for the error, delivering a two-run single through the right side.

The Huskers found the scoreboard again in the bottom of the sixth thanks to some strong pinch-hit at bats. Junior Courtney Breault began the inning with a walk, before pinch-hit singles from junior Megan Southworth and senior Madison Drake. Drake's single scored Breault to make it a 5-2 game.

A Colorado State error loaded the bases with one out before Taylor Edwards delivered a two-run single. Guile then produced an RBI single, as did Tatum Edwards. That set the stage for Thomason to line a two-run single into left center that wrapped up the run-rule victory.

Nebraska wraps up action on the first day of the Troy Cox Classic immediately with a game against host New Mexico State.
