Huskers Fall to Oregon State

Tempe, Ariz. - Playing its fourth game in a span of 24 hours proved too much for the 20th-ranked Nebraska softball team in Saturday's second game, as the Huskers ran into a red-hot Oregon State offense in an 11-3, six-inning loss at the Kajikawa Classic.

Oregon State managed eight runs over the first two innings to take control, despite recording only three hits. The Beavers were aided by three Husker errors during that time, three walks and one hit batter, and six of OSU's first eight runs were unearned. Oregon State finished with a 3-2 record in its stay at the Kajikawa Classic, and the Beaver offense scored 58 runs in their five games.

Tina Andreana (1-1) earned the win in the circle for OSU, working in and out of jams all night long. Andreana allowed three runs on only four hits against a Husker offense that had scored 33 runs in its last three games. Andreana worked around seven walks, as Nebraska stranded eight runners.

Senior right-hander Ashley Hagemann (1-2) took the loss, allowing 10 runs for the second straight start, although only four were earned. Classmate Haley Workman relieved Hagemann for the sixth inning and allowed one run in two-thirds of an inning.

After the Huskers were retired in order in the top of the first, Oregon State loaded the bases with none out in the bottom of the frame. A one-out, RBI bloop single was followed by a bases-loaded walk to give the Beavers a 2-0 lead. Then with two outs, a Husker error allowed two more runs to score.

In the top of the second, senior Ashley Guile, sophomore Tatum Edwards and junior Brooke Thomason drew consecutive walks to load the bases with none out. Freshman Mattie Fowler then brought Guile home with a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 4-1. An opportunity to get closer was stymied when Oregon State turned an inning-ending double play on the next batter.

The Huskers faltered again in the bottom of the second inning. Back-to-back errors and a one-out walk loaded the bases before Lea Cavestany blasted a grand slam to center field to make it 8-1.

Nebraska got a pair of runs back in the top of the third. Freshman Jordan Bettiol began the inning with a single and scored on a double down the left field line from senior Nikki Haget. Haget then scored three batters later on an RBI double from Guile that cut the lead to 8-3.

The Huskers had a chance to get back into the game when Andreana issued leadoff walks in both the fourth and the fifth innings. But Nebraska failed to capitalize on either opportunity, including leaving the bases loaded in the fifth.

Oregon State then found its offensive form again in the bottom of the fifth, using a two-run homer to build a 10-3 advantage. One inning later, a walk-off single lifted the Beavers to the run-rule victory.

Haget led Nebraska's offensive effort by finishing 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a run scored.

The Huskers wrap up play at the season-opening Kajikawa Classic on Sunday at Noon (Central) against No. 23 Georgia Tech.
