The Nebraska women's basketball team continued its hot start to the 2011-12 season with a 70-50 win over Savannah State Monday night. Big Ten Player-of-the-Week Lindsey Moore had 10 points, four rebounds and four assists. She has 17 straight double-figure scoring games dating back to last season. Sophomore forward Jordan Hooper has also scored in double figures in every game this season, including 15 points and eight rebounds in the win over SSU. After starting the season with a perfect 4-0 home stand, the Huskers embark on a nine-day, three-game road trip. First up for NU is a Friday afternoon game against Florida A&M in Tallahassee.
Florida A&M is playing this entire season with a heavy heart as transfer guard Shannon Washington was killed in early September. Coming off a 15-15 season, 9-7 in the MEAC, the Lady Rattlers are ranked fourth in the MEAC preseason poll. FAMU has three returning seniors who were all selected to the preseason all-conference teams.
Tameka McKelton, a 5-8 senior guard, returns after leading FAMU in scoring last year (16.5 ppg). She has started one game and played in two of the Rattlers' three games this season and is averaging 8.0 ppg. McKelton had 15 points in FAMU's 73-57 loss at Nebraska last season.
Antonia Bennett, a 6-1 senior, averaged 16.3 points per game last year and is currently leading the team with 18 points per contest. She passed the 1,000-point scoring mark in her junior season and had nine points and six rebounds against Nebraska last year.
Keturah Martin has started all three games this season and averages 4.3 points. Kimberly Sparkman rounds out FAMU's probable starting lineup by averaging nine points per game.
Fourth-year Rattler head coach LeDawn Gibson coached on the high school level for 12 seasons at Winter Haven (Fla.) High School where she won two state titles.
In the only previous meeting between the two teams, Florida A&M led at the half 36-34 in Lincoln on Jan. 2, 2011. Lindsey Moore led the Nebraska comeback and posted the first triple-double in Nebraska basketball (men's or women's) history with 12 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds. NU defeated FAMU 73-57.
