Chip-N Club Members,
I'm very excited about our 2012 recruits. They both bring a passion for the game, enthusiasm, work ethic and a highly competitive nature. I believe both will have a huge impact for us immediately.
Cassie Deeg (Hugo, Minn.) is already competing at a high level and has proven she can be successful against quality Division I student-athletes. She is solid in every facet of the game and is a proven winner. Cassie is a quality student and person with a wonderful personality.
Hannah Luebke's strength lies in her long game. Hannah is from Stuttgart, Germany, and has above average length and the desire to be a go-to performer. She is a good all-around athlete with the potential to be an outstanding collegiate golfer. She also possesses a great personality and will fit right in. I'm excited to have an International player join our program again. Hannah will be our second student-athlete ever from Germany (joining Shirin Hornecker).
Our fall season ended on a high note as we closed by defeating three teams ranked in the top 50 and being oh so close to beating two others including 17th-ranked Texas A&M. We actually beat them in two of the three rounds. I think this tournament goes along was in showing our players what they are capable of accomplishing this season.
We really challenged the team this fall by playing tournaments on some very difficult and varied golf courses. It was about preparing them for the postseason. I would dare say they are not going to play a course this spring that will be intimidating after what they faced this fall.
The top highlight of the fall for me was our school-record 280 (-8) in the second round at Briggs Ranch, which broke the school record by four shots. It was a magical day where all five starters just kept making quality shot after quality shot. All told, we had 18 birdies, and three players fired personal-best rounds.
Maddie Sheils shot a final-round 67 at Sahalee to post a come-from-behind victory, and was another memory I will always cherish, along with Kayla Knopik's and Steffi Neisen's 69's at Briggs Ranch. It is so exciting to see players break thru mental barriers and do something they have never done before.
I am really looking forward to the spring to see what this team is going to accomplish. They have the potential to make a magical run, and I would love nothing more than this particular group to do just that. The very first tournament of the spring will be our best field of the season, maybe ever in the regular season, where we will face 12 teams ranked in the top 50, including four in the top 20. We get to return to two of our favorite events over spring break in Entrada at Snow Canyon and Mountain View. We also get to compete in our first-ever Big Ten Championship.
It all sets up to be an exciting spring with our dreams and goals within our grasp.
Go Big Red!
Robin
