Sophomore forward Jordan Hooper exploded for 24 points and 17 rebounds in leading the Nebraska Women's Basketball team to an 86-55 win over Pittsburg State last Sunday in an exhibition game to open the 2011-12 season.  Hooper, an All-Big 12 Freshman team selection last year, had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds by halftime.  Junior point guard Lindsey Moore was solid, with seven points, six rebounds, five assists and zero turnovers in 19 minutes of play.

NU got significant contributions from its six freshmen. True freshman Emily Cady from Seward had 14 points in 24 minutes while redshirt freshman guard Rebecca Woodberry added 10 points and five rebounds. The Huskers close out exhibition play with the Nebraska-Kearney Lopers this Sunday in Lincoln.

UNK returns five seniors and a lot of depth from a team that finished with a deceptive 13-14 overall record in 2010-11. The Lopers were 10-4 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) and 11-9 overall when senior all-conference forward Megan Becker was lost to the season to injury. UNK lost five of their final seven games without Becker.

Vanessa Leeper-Jones, a 5-10 forward, returns for her senior season to lead the Lopers.  A part-time starter as a goalkeeper on the UNK soccer team, she gave up soccer and got married during the offseason. Last year she started all 27 games for UNK and led the team in scoring (16.9 ppg), minutes played and blocked shots.  A pre-season All-RMAC selection, Leeper-Jones did not start against the Huskers in 2010, but came off the bench to add 14 points in UNK's 97-55 loss at the Devaney Center.  She is only 95 points away from 1,000 career points. A deadly free-throw shooter, Leeper-Jones is second all-time in school history, making 84 percent of her foul shots (210-250).

Debi Johnson, a 5-6 senior guard, led UNK in steals, three-pointers and tied for the team lead in assists last year.  She started all 27 games and was named to the all-conference team. The 2009 RMAC Freshman of the Year, Johnson averaged 13.3 ppg in 2010-11. Tessa Kreutzer, a 5-9 senior, has started 26 games in her career, including three games last season.  She averaged 4.0 ppg and had 12 points in the loss to the Huskers last year. Shelby Zimmerman, a 5-10 sophomore, started the final six games of last season after the injury to Becker.  Zimmerman averaged 3.8 points per game.

Junior transfer Ivy Jones rounds out UNK's probable starting lineup.  The 5-5 Jones was the MVP of the Bay Valley Conference and first-team All-California last year in leading Solano Community College to regular-season and tournament titles.  She averaged 14.3 points per game and led the team with 38 three-pointers.

Second-year UNK head coach Kevin Chaney  was an assistant coach for 16 years, including 10 at Solano Community College in California.  He is the sixth head coach in Loper history.

UNK will be looking to fill Becker's shoes in the post area, but they have a very strong team in terms of depth. In fact, the Lopers will have 74 career UNK starts sitting on their bench if their probable starting lineup stays intact Sunday.  They also excel at the foul line, making an impressive 77 percent of their team free throws in 2010-11.

This will be the 10th consecutive preseason game between UNK and Nebraska. The Huskers have won all previous nine exhibition meetings.

I cordially invite you to join Jeff Griesch and me for Nebraska Women's Basketball on the Husker Sports Network.  Our radio broadcast Sunday afternoon beings with the Husker Courtside pre-game show at 1:45 p.m. (central) with the tip-off scheduled for 2:05 p.m. on the Husker Sports Network.
