Huskers Fire School-Record Round in Texas

San Antonio, Texas - The Nebraska women's golf team will certainly remember the Alamo. The Huskers shattered the school single-round record with an eight-under-par 280 in the second round of the Alamo Invitational at the Briggs Ranch Golf Club on Monday.

The Huskers' team total eclipsed the previous school record of 284 set last season in the final round of the Mountain View Collegiate in Tucson, Ariz. In addition to smashing the school record, three Huskers (Kayla Knopik, Shelby Martinek, Katelyn Wright) posted collegiate career-best rounds on Tuesday afternoon in San Antonio.

"It was exciting to see everybody playing to their potential at the same time," Nebraska Coach Robin Krapfl said. "We have been pretty inconsistent this fall, but it coming together for us now. We played pretty solid golf yesterday with a 294, and then to get the round we had today is going to show the players the kind of team we can be."

Krapfl said the scoring conditions on the Briggs Ranch course Monday were ideal, with temperatures around 80 degrees and virtually no wind.

"It was a perfect day to score, and our players took advantage of it," Krapfl said. "There are quite a few days every year where scoring conditions are perfect and you still struggle. You still have to make shots in perfect conditions, and we did that today."

Nebraska's record-setting round vaulted the Huskers from a tie for fifth after the opening round into first place in the team standings. NU's 36-hole score of 574 is just two strokes back of the school-record 36-hole score of 572, also set at Mountain View in 2007. Nebraska owns a two-shot lead over Baylor and the hosts from UTSA, which both closed the day at 576.

Five teams in the 14-team tournament field entered the tournament ranked among the top 50 teams nationally in the GolfStat rankings, including No. 17 Texas A&M. The Huskers own a 14-stroke lead over the Aggies heading into Tuesday's final round.

Senior Madeleine Sheils continued her impressive fall campaign by scorching the 6,272-yard, par-72 layout at Briggs Ranch for a three-under-par 69. Sheils climbed into a tie for fourth place individually heading into Tuesday's final round at two-under-par 142.

The native of Boise, Idaho, sits just two strokes behind leaders Hayley Davis from Baylor and Central Florida's Monifa Sealy, who are at four-under-par 140 through 36 holes.

Sheils, who will take aim at her third top-five finish of the fall, was far from the lone Husker playing well on Tuesday. Fellow senior Kayla Knopik fired a career-best 69 to climb into a tie for 10th individually. Knopik, a Papillion, Neb., native, birdied four of her first five holes to set the tone for the Huskers on the day.

True freshman Shelby Martinek added a career-best 70 for the Huskers, bettering the 71 she shot two weeks ago at the Hoosier Fall Invitational. Martinek is tied with Knopik at even-par 144 through two rounds.

Sophomore Katelyn Wright also set a collegiate career best with an even-par 72 to round out the scoring for the Huskers. The Incline Village, Nev., native surpassed her previous best of 73 set last season at the UNLV Spring Invitational. Wright is tied for 32nd individually.

Nebraska's day went so well that they didn't count sophomore Steffi Neisen's one-over-par 73 in the second round. Neisen, who posted the Huskers' top score of the first round with a 72, is still in contention for a top-10 finish. The New Prague, Minn., native enters the final round in a tie for 13th at 145 just one stroke back of three players tied for 10th.

Nebraska will take aim at its first team title on Tuesday since the 2008 Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational. The final round begins at 8:30 a.m. with live scoring available at GolfStat.com.
