Martinek, Huskers in Hunt at Hoosier Fall Classic

Carmel, Ind. - Shelby Martinek fired a career-best 71 to close the opening day of the Hoosier Fall Invitational in a tie for eighth at 151, while helping the Huskers to fourth place in the team standings Monday at Crooked Stick Golf Club.

Martinek, a true freshman from Tempe, Ariz., scorched the 6,030-yard layout at Crooked Stick Golf Club for a one-under-par 71 while playing just her second tournament in the Nebraska lineup.

In addition to Martinek's big round, the Huskers got to solid rounds from seniors Madeleine Sheils (77-76-153, T13th) and Kayla Knopik (77-77-154, T17th) on the opening day of the tournament. Sophomore Steffi Neisen added rounds of 77 and 81 to sit in a tie for 32nd, while sophomore Katelyn Wright settled for a tie for 50th after two rounds, but produced a counting round of 78 in the second round to help the Huskers.

Nebraska's second-round team total of 302 tied for the Huskers' season best, which was set in the final round of the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational.

With all five golfers contributing, the Huskers closed the first 36 holes at the Hoosier Fall Classic in fourth place. NU was 10 strokes back of the team leaders from Notre Dame and just six strokes behind second-place Illinois. The Huskers were four strokes back of Eastern Michigan in third, and five strokes ahead of fourth-place Wichita State heading into Tuesday's final round.

The tournament concludes with the final 18 holes beginning with a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m. central time. Live scoring is available at GolfStat.com.
