Lincoln - Nebraska senior Dexter Spitsnogle was recently named a second-team Summer Collegiate All-American by Perfect Game USA. One of 12 starting pitchers named across the first, second and third teams, Spitsnogle played for Rick Twyman's Haysville Heat in the Jayhawk League.
The Heat captured its league title and won the NBC Midwest Regional crown, which qualified them for the NBC National Tournament. Haysville went on to finish fourth at the national tournament and Spitsnogle was named a BaseballSavings.com NBC World Series All-American.
Spitsnogle was nearly untouchable during the 2011 summer season with a perfect 8-0 record and a 1.02 ERA. In 53 innings of work, the Odell, Neb., native posted 34 strikeout and gave up just 27 hits. Over his final 47 innings of action he kept opponents off the scoreboard by not giving up an earned run.
Spitsnogle started his collegiate career at Doane College, where he played three seasons for the Tigers. He then transferred to Nebraska but was forced to sit out the 2011 season. During his junior season in 2010 at Doane, Spitsnogle was named first-team All-GPAC, after posting a 6-2 record in 11 appearances, including three compete games and one shutout. He carried a 2.48 ERA and ranked third in the league in strikeouts with 74.
The Huskers are set to open fall practice on Thursday, Sept. 8 and will start their annual Red-White World Series on Friday, Oct. 7.
