Lincoln - Former Nebraska right-handed pitcher Steve Edlefsen struck out two Houston batters last week in his major league debut. Edlefsen made his debut for the San Francisco Giants on Aug. 21, as the Bloomington, Minn., native worked 1 1/3 innings of perfect baseball in the Giants' 6-4 win over the Astros in Houston.
Edlefsen has made two other appearance for the Giants at home over the past week, pitching 1/3 of an inning against San Diego on Aug. 23 and an inning of work against Houston on Aug. 25.
Edlefsen was one of eight Huskers drafted in 2007, as he was picked in the 16th round by the Giants. He was originally a 41st-round pick as an infielder by Boston in 2005 and was transitioned into a pitcher during his final season at Nebraska in 2007, as he went 0-1 with four saves and a 4.10 ERA in 23 appearances. The righty was second on the team in both saves and appearances and held opponents to a .226 batting average in 26.1 innings of work. He earned a pair of saves in the series win at No. 22 Alabama early in the season before moving to a set-up role for the final half of the campaign. In addition to his work on the mound, Edlefsen saw time at third base and the outfield, playing in 13 contests.
