Rex Burkhead Quotes: Aug. 29th

Junior I-Back Rex Burkhead
On if he ever thought he'd be called the "old man"
"The old man? Maybe because of my looks, my hairline, my bald spot. I guess it's not natural for a 21 year old. I've been called that a few times because of that, but I am stepping into that role this year. The kid of role that Roy (Helu Jr.) had the past couple years. It's been a great experience teaching these younger guys that have come in. Helping them out as they transition from high school to college. It's been really neat."

On how much more he has to take care of his body since he will be the featured back
"A lot more. Just learning from Roy and how he took care of his body off the field, getting off his feet whenever possible, getting in the cold tub, stretching, whatever it was to recover, it's huge. The season is so long, and it's a valuable thing in order to stay on the field."

On how many carries he expects to take per game this year
"I couldn't tell you. Whatever it is I'm ready for. Whatever Coach (Tim) Beck has in his mind, I'm up for it."

On if he will be throwing the ball out of the Wildcat this season
"Possibly. It's up to Coach Beck and whatever he's feeling. If the time comes, I'm up for it."

On what the fans can expect on Saturday
"It's going to be an attacking, explosive offense. The ball is spread out quite a bit, but we're just going to go out there and have a great time and have fun."

On if fans can expect to see more passes down the field this year
"Yeah, definitely. It depends on plays that are called, but we've got a lot of talent at that position. A lot of guys that can make big plays. Kenny Bell, B.K (Brandon Kinne), Stanley (Jean-Baptiste), all those guys, it's definitely a possibility."

On if he has seen one of the true freshman running backs rise above the other two
"I couldn't really point out one. All three of them have done a tremendous job. They are very talented. They are great kids, No. 1. I love competing with them every day, and hanging out with them. They can do it all. They are talented. They've lived up to the hype so far in practice. They'll be great players for years to come."

On what he will tell the freshmen running backs to get ready for Saturday
"Just to have fun. That's the biggest thing, have fun. Don't get caught up in the hype of being in a college game now, or how there's a big ol' college defender on me now. Just have fun with it, enjoy it, and make it worthwhile."

On how the running backs stack up to him as a freshman

"Physically, I think they are very developed. With speed and agility and all that, further along than I was. Mentally they are picking it up very quickly in the meeting room and on film. They are going to develop even more and be great players."

On the offensive line compared to the last couple years
"They are a great bunch. Mike Caputo is a great leader of those guys, and he's done a tremendous job making them ready to come to practice every day keeping the energy up. Coach (Barney) Cotton has done a tremendous job with them. They're big, strong, physical and they are going to get after you."

On if Aaron Green was a guy he had heard about since he was from Texas

"Yeah, absolutely. I met him when I came in my freshman year because of his brother, Andrew. I had heard his name quite a bit, probably more if he was in the Dallas area, instead of the San Antonio area, but he's a great player. He's a great kid. He's going to do great."

On if Aaron Green came in with a big head after his high school career
"Absolutely not. I think that's one thing that separates these guys from possibily other 5-stars, is you could say they have come in right away willing to learn. Be patient, be respectful to the older guys and the coaching staff. They are doing whatever they can to get their knowledge of the game to a high level."

On if he is following Roy Helu Jr. in the NFL
"Absolutely. I was texting with Roy the other day. I was talking about his game where he had over 100 yards rushing. I guess that was two weeks ago. He's really excited about it and he's having a great time."

On how anxious he is to start the season
"Very anxious. Fall camp is fun, but at the same time we're ready to hit someone else. We can't wait to strap on and actually get into the game mode."
