Brandon Kinnie - Aug. 29th Press Conference

Senior Wide Receiver Brandon Kinnie
On the new offense
"Playing fast, attacking people. That's what we're going to do and have fun doing it. That's pretty much it until Saturday."

On Nebraska having more speed than most teams
"I guess you could say that. I remember seeing Oklahoma and Missouri and stuff like that. We're just going to play fast."

On what playing fast means
"Just playing and attacking people. Running where they're not and throwing the ball where they're not."

On how he's enjoyed the transition to the new offense
"It's been great. It's not so much robotic like. Like 'get here, stay here'. Like 'get to 10 yards and do this'. There is kind of freedom to do a little more things and have fun doing it. Coach [Tim] Beck is a fun guy and he's a fun guy to be around as well. So he's made it fun and he's made it easier to learn, and we've had spurts in practice where we've given the defense fits. That's a good thing especially for being a defense with two brainiacs back there and a defense like that. It's been fun, and I'm just excited to show it."

On if he gets nervous before the first week or more excited
"I think I'm more anxious than anything. It probably won't hit me until like Wednesday or Thursday. I've been getting tweets since like 200 days left (until first game). So I've known of the countdown somewhat. I'm just more anxious than anything. I'm just ready to play. This is the last go around and it's going to go fast, so I just got to take it all in."

On how he'll look at his senior year and if he'll cherish it
"Yeah, big time. I'm going to cherish every moment here. Since I've been here, it's been a blessing being here and being part of a tradition like this. It's been fun, but I'm definitely going to cherish this one because it's the last go around."

On what will be a successful season
"Just go out and compete every Saturday. Play fast and play with a chip on our shoulders and play us against the world. Just go out and compete every Saturday."

On being so close the past two years to a conference title and if that makes him hungrier
"Yeah. I think we've always been hungry for something. But going away and thinking that we should have two Big 12 Championships is huge for us. But at the same time, the past is the past. We just got to deal with what is now and move forward."

On if the freedom on offense means he has to work on his route running
"Big time. As a receiver, you want to be detailed in your route game. You want to be consistent at that, but you also want to be consistent at catching the ball. Even thought it allows more freedom, you still have to do those certain little things to get open."

On how good the new members of the Nebraska secondary are
"Good. Ciante [Evans] is a competitor, man. He's good. He's very good. He makes me mad because he's so good sometimes. I'm used to just dealing with Fonzo [Alfonzo Dennard] all the time, but now I go to the other side, and I still have to deal with him at times. Him and Andrew [Green], all those guys in the secondary, they're playing fast and being physical, too. So that's a good thing. I have a lot of confidence in them."

On freshman Jamal Turner's camp
"Great. He's an explosive guy, as you guys know that already. He's been consistent at what he's supposed to be doing, too. He's detailing his game up as well. He's still young and still learning things: how to run routes. He hasn't played receiver that long. He's going to learn things like that. He catches the ball pretty well to be a guy coming from quarterback. The biggest thing is just working on his route running, and he's been doing that and getting better at that every day."

On where he is mentally to just get this thing going
"I'm just anxious more than anything. It was a bad taste losing in that bowl game (2010 Holiday Bowl). A lot of us still kind of remember that and we don't want to feel like that ever again. We're just ready to go out there and play somebody else. We're tired of beating up on each other. We just want to go out there and have fun."

On who will be returning kicks
"I don't know for sure. Lavonte [David] and all those guys give me crap when I'm back there cause I'm like the biggest one. You got Jamal [Turner] and Ameer [Abdullah]. I don't know who they're going to have back there. It should be fun. All those guys are fast and explosive. If they get it and they take it, I'm fine with it. I'll be on the sideline watching."

On if he will take Jamal Turner and the other young receivers under his wing
"I kind of will be. Like I said, I've opened my arms up to those guys, and I've been a leader to these guys. I've loved them like my brothers and that's a true statement. We've had fun in our room this year. We've been more relaxed but at the same time, still having fun doing it. So I will be. I'll be the first one down there, throwing them, jumping with them or something. I've had fun getting to know these guys even more and getting to do the little things with them."

On what he tells the true freshmen what the atmosphere is like on a home opener
"I didn't play in front of 85,000 as a freshmen, it was more like a couple hundred. Just to be relaxed. You're going to have some butterflies. But after you make that first play, you'll be fine. It'll just be like playing football. Just don't think too much into what everybody else thinks, just do your job and know what you got to do and just do it fast. And have fun. Just have fun doing it as well."

On what he tells people on how to handle the media
"You can't buy into it too much. We all have a job and we understand that. When you do something bad, you do it and you move on. When you do something good, you stay humble about it and you go out and continue to be consistent at doing it. You don't let it get to your head. But one thing, especially after the Texas game, I learned, you can't be down on yourself. You can't at all. That weighed on me for a while. I came out the next week and just dropped it and forgot about it and came out and played ball. That's the biggest thing you have to do, you go to Nebraska, so everybody is watching, so when it happens, it happens. Drop it and get over it."

On how as a team, Nebraska addresses not having problems off the field
"I think we pride our self on that, especially with a coach like coach Bo [Pelini]. You don't want to deal with him face-to-face after doing something like that. We put this Nebraska gear on for a reason every day. We wear the 'N' on our helmet every day for a reason every day. We pride ourselves on being like that. We're not perfect, but there's nothing wrong with trying to be and walk that straight line and be that every day. Like I said, a lot of these guys on this team are role models to little kids, to grownups too as well to show that this is how it should be done. We're trying to do that every day - stay out of trouble so we pride ourselves on that."

On if the South Dakota State game is a good example about taking an FCS team lightly
"Yeah. Big time. All games are important. All of them are. You have to play them. For me, I like showcasing my talent every Saturday no matter who we're playing. So there's no game this year to me, that's more important than the other one. All of them are the same for me. I just want to go out there and play and have fun and win."

On the feeling as a player the days before a game
"Me, for the most part is just being anxious, just knowing my assignments, just knowing the details of what I'm going to be doing. Learning that and just going out there and executing it. My big thing is, I just want to have a good week of practice too before the game to reassure myself."

On the confidence level in the new kickers
"Those guys are great kickers. They've both competed for spots. We had a kickoff competition for them. (Brett) Maher was for the defense. (Mauro) Bondi was for the offense. They were kicking balls back and forth and none of them missed. We could scream and do all of that to distract them and none of them missed. That's a good sign. We're just trying to pick off where we left off from. Alex Henery is a big loss. Look at him. We're confident in those guys and we have a lot of confidence in them. We expect big things out of them"

On how big of an emphasis has it been to cut down on the fumbles
"It's been big. We've been doing drills and stuff like gauntlet drills. I know, myself, I've gotten better at tucking the ball in because I know I was kind of wild with it last year. My hands are so big and just being able to grip the ball. I've been doing great by paying attention to the little things. When you're a leader, you have to do little things like that. If you're not doing it, you're telling the young guys that it's okay for them not to do it. You don't want to show that. Like I said, being a leader, you have to show up every day and do the little things right every day. That's a good thing because I want to try and do that every day."

On quarterback Taylor Martinez's improvement
"He's being more vocal, being more confident. He's walking around with a chip on his shoulder like he's got something to prove. When we break the huddles down, he's breaking it down. He never did that last year. He's more vocal and he's confident. He's controlling things at the line. He's calling plays and checks and stuff like that. I believe if your quarterback is confident, it makes your whole offense confident."
