Philadelphia, Pa. - While the rest of the Nebraska track and field team was competing at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa, Jamaica natives Nicholas Gordon and Chad Wright were at Franklin Field for the Penn Relays on Friday.
Wright started the day for NU with an eight-place showing in the championship division of the men's shot put. He tossed a personal best of 56-7 ½, which topped his previous best of 55-3 ¾. The freshman then came back later in the day with second-place throw of 188-1 in the championship division of the discus. James Plummer of Rutgers topped Wright by three feet with his throw of 191-1.
Gordon capped the day with a second-place finish in the championship division of the long jump to Texas' Marquise Goodwin. Ranked 15th in the nation entering the meet with a leap of 25-2 ½, Gordon put himself into the national top ten with his jump of 26-0 on his fifth attempt of the competition. Goodwin would win the meet with his leap of 26-3 ½ on his final attempt.
Gordon will be back at Franklin Field tomorrow at 1 p.m. (CT) for the championship division of the triple jump.
The rest of the Nebraska track and field team will be in competition at the Drake Relays tomorrow, before they return to Lincoln for Sunday's Nebraska Open, which is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start at Ed Weir Stadium.
