Lincoln - Senior Mary Kate Bird headlined a collection of Nebraska women's golfers who earned honors off the course at the conclusion of the 2010-11 season.
Bird, a business administration major from Kansas City, Mo., was one of three Huskers to earn first-team academic All-Big 12 honors from the conference this week. It was third third academic All-Big 12 award of Bird's career and the second time she claimed first-team honors.
Bird, who also received one of 30 prestigious Nebraska student-athlete HERO awards last week for her commitment to NU's award-winning life skills program, was also honored at NU's annual Student-Athlete Recognition Banquet on April 17.
Bird was joined on the academic all-conference squad by juniors Madeleine Sheils and Kayla Knopik.
Sheils, a native of Boise, Idaho, captured first-team academic All-Big 12 honors for the second straight season with better than a 3.9 GPA as a philosophy major. Sheils also joined Bird in claiming a HERO Award for her commitment to community service at Nebraska, while also be honored at the academic awards banquet.
Knopik, a finance major from Papillion, Neb., earned the first academic All-Big 12 honor of her career. She was also honored at the Student-Athlete Recognition banquet, along with fellow junior Carolyn Schorgl and former Huskers J.C. (Stevenson) Weaver and Charlotte Wendner.
