Catching Up with Former Husker Danielle Page

Danielle Page recently completed her third season in professional basketball since graduating from Nebraska in 2008. Page, who helped the Huskers to the second round of the 2008 NCAA Tournament as a senior, ranks No. 3 on Nebraska's career block list. In 2010-11, she competed for ZTE in Hungary in one of the top league's in Europe. She led the Hungarian A League in scoring and blocked shots with 18 points and two blocks per game, while ranking third in the league with nine rebounds per game. Former Husker All-American and 2010 WNBA All-Rookie pick Kelsey Griffin played in the same league as Page this season.

Hey Husker Fans!!

It has been a while since I checked in, so I thought I might update you all on my overseas basketball adventures!

As most of you know I started my professional career playing with the Connecticut Sun in the WNBA. That was quite a learning experience. I didn't get a chance to get a lot of court time, but I learned so much just from spending a summer practicing and playing against the best women's basketball players in the world.

From there I spent half a season playing for a Euro-cup team in Bulgaria, which allowed me to play not only in Bulgaria but also in Spain, Israel, and Serbia. After I finished my half season there, I moved on to finish the season in Poland.

The next season I ended up going to Israel to play. I had a successful start to the season in Israel, but just seven games into the season I tore both my ACL and MCL in my left knee.

Obviously I was extremely disappointed, but it did allow me to spend most of the 2010 Big 12 season watching the Huskers in person on their journey to the regular-season conference championship. That was an amazing experience.

I followed the team around as a fan while I rehabbed my knee. I was so proud of the girls, and it was exciting to see all of their hard work pay off.

After an offseason of rehabilitation on my knee, I was able to get back on the court in 2010-11 in Europe. I spent the past season playing in Hungary. It was an extremely long season that ended in late April.

Our team was projected to finish fifth in the league, but we wrapped up our three-game series on April 21 with a victory to capture third-place on a buzzer beater. The third-place finish was the best in club history.

Despite the success on the court, life in Hungary was initially pretty tough. I find it's always hard to adjust to a new country and a new team, especially at the same time. But the longer I was in Hungary, the more I got to know my teammates and the easier it was being away from the states.

All my journeys to new leagues and new countries were a little like coming to Nebraska from Colorado after I graduated from high school in Monument, Colo. The first few months away from home were a little rough, but then I started making connections with teammates and getting adjusted to my surroundings. It took me a while to get comfortable, but after some time it began to feel like home.

I did have some help this year getting over the homesickness, as Kelsey Griffin also played in Hungary. It was great to have such a close friend in the same country. Though the one problem with playing in the same league with Kels was having to play against her. Her team beat up on my squad four times this season.

Needless to say Kels makes sure I don't forget those games. In fact, her team knocked us into the third-place series in the playoffs. I guess she must still be trying to even the score for all those shots of hers I blocked in practice at the Devaney Center!

Basketball has provided me with an incredible opportunity to travel all over Europe, and I probably don't take enough advantage of it. I do truly appreciate the fact that I have been allowed to continue my basketball career and able to make a living off of it.

I know my time as a Husker under Coach Yori has given me this incredible opportunity, and I still look back fondly at my time in Lincoln.

Don't be surprised if you catch me around town or at a game from time to time. I plan on visiting Nebraska whenever I get a chance!

Go Big Red!!!
