Lawrence, Kan. - The Nebraska combined-event athletes kicked off the 84th edition of the Kansas Relays on Wednesday at Memorial Stadium. Teran Walford finished day one of the men's decathlon in second place, while in the women's heptathlon Rachel Butler is third and Anne Martin is fifth.
Walford started with personal-best performances in the first three events of the day. He opened with a time of 11.51 in the 100 meters, which bettered his previous best of 11.53. He then added four inches to his PR in the long jump with a leap of 21-5 ¼, the top mark in the field. The sophomore continued to excel in the shot put as he improved on his previous best of 36-11 ¾ with a toss of 37-6 ¾.
Walford's streak came to an end in the high jump with a mark of 6-0 ¾. He finished day one in the 400 meters with a time of 51.14 to give him an overall score of 3,460 points. Walford trails Iowa State's Jamal Currica (3,582 points) in the overall standing as the field will finish the decathlon with the 110-meter hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1,500 meters starting tomorrow at 8:30 a.m.
On the women's side, Butler was one of three competitors in the field to score more than 3,000 points on day one, as Kansas' Rebecca Neville is in first with 3,125 points, Iowa State's Jordon Andreassen sits second with 3,028 points and Butler is third with 3,011 points. Through the first four events of the heptathlon, Martin was on the only Husker to post a personal best as she improved on her previous best of 32-9 ½ in the shot put with a toss of 33-3. She ended the day with 2,876 points.
True freshman Jordan Stiens is also competing in the heptathlon and is in fourth place, but she is entered in the meet as an unattached athlete. She posted the top shot put mark in the field with a throw of 36-5 ½ points, helping her finish day one with 2,950 points.
The women's heptathlon is slated to continue tomorrow at 9 a.m. with the long jump. The group will then compete in the javelin and 800 meters. Live results can be found at DeltaTiming.com.
