Happy Spring to all you wonderful Husker fans! I thought all of you would like an update on the recent exploits in overseas leagues by some former Nebraska women's basketball players.
Former Big 12 Player of the Year Kelsey Griffin continues to impress in her professional career. She has played this season in EuroBasketball for MiZo Pecs 2010 in Hungary. She finished the regular season seventh in the Hungarian A League in scoring (14.2 ppg) and led her Pecs team to the regular-season crown with a 23-1 record.
Pecs has been equally impressive in the postseason and is within one victory of capturing the postseason league championship. Griffin had a game-high 24 points and seven rebounds in Pecs' 78-68 win over MKB Euroleasing on Wednesday. Now with a 2-0 lead in the best-of-three series, Pecs 2010 can clinch the title with a win Sunday. MKB Eurloleasing's roster includes two WNBA players and former collegiate stars Marissa Coleman and Amber Holt.
Two weeks ago, Griffin's team eliminated former Husker teammate Danielle Page's ZTE team from the playoffs, 2-0. Page had an exceptional season, leading the Hungarian A League in scoring (18.0 ppg) and blocked shots (2.0 bpg) and finishing third in rebounding (9.2 rpg).
A little farther west on the European continent, Yvonne Turner had a blistering game in the German DBBL League semifinals. Turner went off for 27 points, leading her Freiburg team to an 89-68 win over Marburg, the regular-season league champs. Freiburg defeated Marburg, 2-0, to gain a spot in the postseason league championship series against Wasserburg. The DBBL championship series begins Friday, April 15. Turner finished second in the league in scoring (17.4 ppg) and eighth in steals (2.2 spg).
Cory Montgomery has been a consistent starter all season for Moguerza Real Canoe N.C. of the Liga Feminina-2 in Spain. She has averaged 9.8 points and 5.8 rebounds in the 25 games she has played this season.
Finally, Chelsea Aubry continues a stellar professional career in Australia. She played two seasons in the WNBL with the Bendigo Spirit and has recently changed teams and is now playing for the Geelong Lady Cats of the SEABL.
Aubry won't play a full season with Geelong, as they are allowing her to return to her home to play with the Canadian National Team in August in the Olympic Games qualifying series.
A nice feature was just done on Aubry for the SEABL league website. You can find that story in the link below:
Finally, I'd like to thank all the fans who reached out to me with well wishes and thoughts when I had to miss the final two games of the season. I was dealing with a family medical situation, and it was vital that I stay back in Nebraska.
I cannot possibly express how grateful I am to Jeff Griesch and Lane Grindle for filling in for me on such short notice. In fact, many of you may not be aware that Jeff's solo effort on the radio at Texas A&M was his first-ever basketball play-by-play! He was truly amazing, and it was a real pleasure getting to sit on the other end of the radio for once and listen to a great broadcast.
Enjoy the offseason, and GO BIG RED!
Matt
