Waco, Texas - Juniors Madeleine Sheils and Kayla Knopik closed the first day of the Baylor Spring Invitational among the top 20 individuals while helping the Nebraska women's golf team to a sixth-place standing in the 18-team field on Monday.
Sheils and Knopik each produced 36-hole scores of 154 to head into Tuesday's final round in a tie for 17th. Sheils fired rounds of 78 and 76, while Knopik added rounds of 79 and 75.
Senior Mary Kate Bird also closed the opening day of the tournament among the top 25 individuals after shooting Nebraska's best round of the day with a 74 in the second round. Bird heads into the final round tied for 24th at 155, after rebounding from an opening-round 81.
The Husker trio helped Nebraska post a two-round score of 621 on the 6,257-yard, par-72 layout at the Twin Rivers Golf Club. NU managed a 317 in the opening round, before climbing the team standings with a 304 in the second round, which marked the third-best round of the tournament by any team.
Texas Tech heads into Tuesday's final round with an 11-stroke lead over second-place Texas-San Antonio. The Lady Raiders opened with a 309 before notching Tuesday's best round with a 295 over the second 18 holes to finish at 604. The Road Runners managed rounds of 309 and 306 to close at 615, just six strokes ahead of the Huskers.
Freshman Steffi Neisen helped the Huskers in the second round with a 79 after opening with an 81. Neisen enters the final round in a tie for 44th at 160.
Junior Katie Keiser tied Knopik for NU's second-best score in the opening round with a 79, but settled for an 85 in the second round to end the day in a tie for 62nd at 164.
Baylor's Chelsey Cothran sits atop the individual leaderboard with a 147 through 36 holes. She owns a one shot lead over Texas Tech's Alex Gibson and UTSA's Taylor Newlin at 148. Gibson (70) and Newlin (71) recorded two of the three rounds below par on Monday among the 94 individuals in the tournament field. Texas State's Gabby de Reuck added a 71 in the opening round.
The tournament concludes with the final 18 holes beginning at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday in Waco. Live scoring will be available on GolfStat.com.
In other action on Monday, Husker junior Carolyn Schorgl produced an opening-round 82 to tie for third at the Creighton Golf Classic in Omaha. Freshman Remylee Molyneux added an opening-round 85 to head into Tuesday's final round in a tie for seventh, while fellow freshman Katelyn Wright is tied for 12th at 87 in a 49-player field.
The Creighton Golf Classic concludes with Tuesday's second round beginning at 8:30 a.m.
