Sheils Leads Huskers in Utah

St. George, Utah - Madeleine Sheils fired a one-over-par 73 to tie for second after 18 holes, then slipped to a tie for 12th after two rounds to lead the Nebraska women's golf team at the BYU Entrada Classic on Monday.

Sheils, a junior from Boise, Idaho, led the Huskers to a tie for seventh in a 15-team field through two rounds on the par-72, 6,073-yard layout at the Entrada at Snow Canyon Course on Monday. The Huskers managed rounds of 314 and 315 to close the first 36 holes at 629 in a tie with New Mexico State.

Wisconsin led the field with a 615 (313-302) through two rounds, while Oklahoma State sat just one shot back in second at 616 (306-310). Texas State (619), Tulsa (621), UTSA (621) and Kansas State (627) are all well within striking distance for the Huskers heading into Tuesday's final round.

Sheils and senior Mary Kate Bird both enter the final round among the top 20 individuals in the tournament. While Sheils heads into the third round at 154 (73-81) in a tie for 12th, Bird is two shots back at 156 (76-80) in a tie for 19th.

Freshman Steffi Neisen is just one stroke behind Bird in a tie for 23rd, after rebounding from an opening-round 82 with a three-over-par 75 in the second round to close at 157.

Junior Kayla Knopik closed the second round in a tie for 44th (83-79-162), along with fellow junior Katie Keiser (85-77-162), who was playing as individual outside the NU lineup. Freshman Katelyn Wright rounded out the NU contingent in a tie for 51st (83-81-164) in an 82-player field.

New Mexico State's Demi Mak sits atop the individual leaderboard heading into the final round with a four-over-par 148 after producing matching rounds of 74 on Monday. Hailey Koschmann from Illinois was just one shot back at 149 (72-77), while BYU's Kelsey Vines stands alone in third at 150 (76-74).

The 54-hole tournament concludes with Tuesday morning's final round.
