IRVING, Texas- Nebraska rifle senior Ryann McGough has been selected as one of 93 recipients of the Big 12's inaugural Dr. Gerald Lage award. McGough is one of Nebraska's conference-leading 18 selections. The honorees will receive public recognition at the Phillips 66 Big 12 Basketball Championships this week.
The Dr. Gerald Lage award is the conference's highest academic honor, given only to students who have more than 100 hours of earned credit with a cumulative grade-point average of 3.80 at the time of nomination. In addition, student-athletes must have lettered at least once in their career while maintaining residence at their institution for a minimum of one academic year.
McGough has been a leader on the range and in the classroom during her time at Nebraska. A psychology major at NU, she was awarded the NCAA Elite 88 award at the 2010 NCAA Rifle Championships, given annually to the student-athlete competing at the event with the highest grade-point average. In addition, McGough has been named to the Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll seven times and has captured four smallbore titles and two air rifle titles during her career at NU. She was named one of five Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) Scholar-Athletes of the Year at the GARC Championships in February 2011.
The Dr. Gerald Lage award was created in memory of Lage, who served as the Oklahoma State faculty athletics representative with the NCAA and the Big Eight/Big 12 Conference from 1983 until his death in 2007. He was the chairman on three occasions, in 1985-86, 1993-94 and most recently in 2003-04.
