Husker Winning Streak Snapped at 10

Cathedral City, Calif. - The 18th-ranked Nebraska softball team saw its 10-game winning streak snapped on Saturday, as the Huskers fell behind early and couldn't recover in a 5-1 loss to Nevada at the Cathedral City Classic.

Walks and timely hitting were the stories of the game. Nebraska tied a season high by walking eight batters in the game and three of those runners came around to score, including two on a two-out grand slam in the top of the third inning by Nevada's Lauren Lastrapes. While Lastrapes delivered a timely hit for the Wolfpack, Nebraska stranded 10 runners in the game and was just 0-for-11 with runners in scoring position. Each team had five hits.

Junior right-hander Haley Workman (1-1) suffered the first loss of her career, allowing five runs on four hits in 2.2 innings. After shutting the Wolfpack out through the first two frames, Workman was unable to get out of the third, allowing five runs before being relieved by fellow junior right-hander Ashley Hagemann.

Hagemann worked the middle innings, as she did not allow a run and gave up only one hit in 2.1 innings. Freshman right-hander Tatum Edwards pitched the final 2.0 innings allowing no runs and no hits.

Nevada (3-9) snapped a five-game losing streak behind a strong performance from Mallary Darby. Darby (3-5) did not allow an earned run and worked around five hits and six walks.

After two scoreless innings, Nevada loaded the bases with one out in the top of the third thanks to a pair of walks and a single. Workman fought back to get a pop out to short before Lastrapes cleared the bases with a grand slam just over the glove of a leaping Nikki Haget in center field.

Two more walks and another single loaded the bases again before Hagemann entered the game. Hagemann immediately coaxed a ground ball to the right side that turned into an infield single, but the Huskers caught a second runner trying to score on the play to end the inning trailing 5-0.

Walks put the Huskers in a jam again in the top of the fifth. Hagemann walked two of the first three batters, then uncorked a wild pitch to put runners on second and third with only one out. But she escaped the jam with back-to-back strikeouts.

The Huskers then got on the board in the bottom of the frame. Sophomore Gabby Banda drew a leadoff walk before Haget lined an 0-2 pitch down the left-field line for a double. On the play, the left fielder mishandled the ball, allowing Banda to score. Trailing 5-1, Nebraska had a chance to cut further into the lead with Haget on second and no outs, but a pair of ground outs and a pop up prevented a potential big inning.

After stranding two more runners in scoring position in the sixth, Taylor Edwards doubled with one out in the top of the seventh with the double to extend her hitting streak to 10 games. Foland produced Nebraska's lone multi-hit game going 2-for-3.

Nebraska (12-2) wraps up play at the Cathedral City Classic on Sunday with back-to-back games against Ohio State and Long Island. First pitch between the Huskers and Buckeyes is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. (Central).
