Saturday is Nebraska Basketball Hall of Fame Day, and the Devaney Center should be rocking when the Husker men host third-ranked Texas.
Nebraska athletic officials are urging all fans to beat the traffic and arrive early at the Devaney Center, so they don't miss important pregame festivities.
"We would like everyone to be in their seats by noon for a special tribute to the newest member of our Hall-of-Fame class .... Bruce Chubick," said Marc Boehm, Nebraska's Executive Associate Athletic Director who oversees basketball.
Chubick is one of only two Husker players in history (Eric Piatkowski is the other) to play on four NCAA Tournament teams.
This evening, Chubick will be inducted into the Nebraska Basketball Hall of Fame, joining 61 previous winners of that prestigious honor.
Tomorrow afternoon, Husker fans will have the opportunity to show their appreciation for Chubick, a three-time academic all-conference forward who scored 878 career points and snagged 618 career rebounds.
In addition to Chubick, two other major award winners from tonight's Hall of Fame banquet will be honored during pre-game ceremonies - 1) former Husker Hall of Fame guard/forward Albert Maxey Sr., the winner of the Nebraska Basketball Hall of Fame Whitehead Distinguished Alumni Award; and 2) Harley and Marcia Bergmeyer, winners of the Bud Cuca Special Merit Award.
During the second half of tomorrow's Nebraska-Texas game, nine Husker Hall of Fame players in attendance will be recognized. They include center Rex Ekwall (1955-57); guard Gary Reimers (1956-58); guard Wilson Fitzpatrick (1958); forward/center Tom Russell (1961-62), forward Bob Siegel (1974-75-76-77); center Dave Hoppen (1983-84-85-86) and forward Beau Reid (1988-89-90-91). The other two Hall-of-Famers in attendance will be Chubick (1991-92-93-94) and Maxey (1959-60).
"We're thrilled that we can honor so many great players from the past," Boehm said, adding that fans will want to remain in their seats at halftime to watch the F-M Acro Team, a group of spirited, athletic, synchronized gymnasts who specialize in entertaining crowds with precision tumbling on mini-trampolines.
Fans who have purchased tickets to tomorrow's men's game can use those tickets for general admission to the Husker women's game against K-State Saturday at 7:05 p.m. The F-M Acro Team also will perform during the women's halftime tomorrow night.
