Palo Alto, Calif. – In the second round of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend the No. 41 Nebraska Cornhuskers (3-2) were knocked off by No. 8 Stanford (3-0) at Stanford’s Taube Stadium. The Cardinal won, 6-1, in what Nebraska Head Coach Kerry McDermott called a “competitive match.”
The Huskers began the match by losing the doubles point.
“They gave us a clinic in doubles,” McDermott said. “It shows us we need to work on our serves and return game.”
Stanford has three players that are ranked in singles play, and all three won their respected matches Saturday afternoon.
In the No. 1 spot, Stanford’s No. 15 Bradley Klahn defeated NU’s Christopher Aumueller, 7-6, 7-6. At the No. 2 spot, the Cardinal’s No. 41 Ryan Thacher knocked off, 6-3, 6-2, No. 99 Calin Paar of Nebraska. No. 61 Alex Clayton of Stanford defeated Nebraska’s No. 97 Benedkit Lindheim 2-6, 7-5, 1-0 (6). Lindheim played at the No. 3 spot in the Husker’s line-up.
At the No. 4 spot, Stanford’s Denis Lin was victorious over NU’s Tom Blackwell, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2. Stanford’s Gregory Hirshman defeated the Huskers’ Andre Stenger 6-3, 6-0, at the No. 5 spot.
The lone win for Nebraska in singles play came when Sebastian Florczyk defeated Stanford’s Matt Kandath, 7-5, 3-6, 7-5. Florczyk was at the No. 6 spot in the Huskers’ line-up.
Head Coach McDermott talked about the 6-1, loss to Stanford saying, “We played a competitive match. They were just a little bit better and stepped it up when they needed to.”
McDermott went on, “It’s a good learning experience for us,” he said. “They won because they were the better team today. They deserved to win and were more competitive.”
Nebraska will travel to Seattle, Wash., to face the Washington Huskies on Saturday, Feb. 5, at 4 p.m.
