Huskers Host Scored Meet
After opening the 2011 season last weekend with the Holiday Inn Invitational, the Nebraska track and field team will compete in it's first team scored meet of the season on Saturday. The Huskers will host the adidas Classic at the Devaney Center Indoor Track at 1:30 p.m., with Houston, Wichita State, Air Force and Alabama (women only) battling Nebraska for the team titles.
The meet will use NCAA scoring, which means that top-six finishers in each even will earn points for their team. First place will earn 10 points, while the next five finishers will earn 8-6-4-2-1, respectively.
The field events will get the meet started at 1:30 with the women's weight throw, while the women's long jump, high jump and pole vault will all start at 1:45. The preliminaries of the women's 60-meter hurdles will be the first event on the track at 2 p.m. The final track event of the day is the men's 4x400-meter relay, scheduled for 6:25 p.m.
Saturday's meet will be part of Nebraska's "Pepsi Pack the House" promotion, which means general admission tickets and 20-ounce Pepsi products will be $1.
Fans interested in tickets can buy them online at Huskers.com, by calling 1-800-8BIGRED or by visiting the Nebraska Athletic Ticket Office, which is across the street from West Stadium.
NCAA Ticket Punched
Only one week into the season and two members of the Nebraska track and field team have already secured a spot a the NCAA Indoor Championships in College Station, Texas.
Senior Natalie Willer was the first Husker to put her name in the field with an automatic-qualifying mark of 14-1 1/4 in the pole vault at the Holiday Inn Invitational.
Willer's mark ranks fourth in the NCAA this season and she is first in the Big 12, as no other vaulter in the conference has cleared higher than 13-5 1/4.
Junior Luke Pinkelman also secured his second career trip to the national meet at the Holiday Inn Invitational with a personal-best toss of 63-6 1/4 in the shot put.
A transfer from Iowa State, Pinkelman previously qualified for the 2009 NCAA Outdoor Championships in the shot put.
Sprint Sweep
True freshman Mara Weekes had an impressive debut as the Bridgetown, Barbados, native won individual titles in the 60 and 200 meters at the Holiday Inn Invitational. Weekes then ended the meet as the anchor leg of the Huskers' winning 4x400-meter relay.
102 and Counting
After winning 51 Big Eight titles during the conference's history from 1974-1996, the Huskers have continued to dominate since moving to the Big 12 Conference for the 1997 season. NU has won a league-high 22 team titles during the Big 12's 14-year history, including the program's historic 100th conference team title in 2007 at the Big 12 Indoor Championships.
The Huskers added their 101st and 102nd titles during the 2009 and 2010 outdoor seasons when they became the first men's team in Big 12 history to win back-to-back team titles at the outdoor conference meet.
Nebraska also added to its lead in outdoor team titles, as it now has six on the men's side. Texas is the only other men's team to win more than one title outdoors, as the Longhorns have four.
All-America Pipeline
Nebraska has been a staple at the NCAA Indoor Championships as the men's team alone has produced 113 All-America awards. The men's squad has been on quite a roll as they have had at least one athlete earn All-American honors at the past 20 national meets. Since the indoor championships began in 1965, the Huskers have failed to leave with at least one All-America award on just five occasions, including 1975, 1982, 1983, 1984 and 1990.
The women's team has been just as good indoors since the national meet started in 1980. Along with three straight national titles from 1982 to 1984, the Huskers have two or more All-Americans at every meet except for 2002 when they failed to earn a honor.
Home-Grown Talent
Fans of track and field in the state of Nebraska will see a lot of familiar faces this season as 65 of the Huskers' 121 athletes are Nebraska natives. Overall, the team is represented by 16 states and 11 countries.
