Huskers Open Big 12 Play with Sooners
I've been broadcasting Division I women's basketball on the radio since 1985 and until this past Sunday evening, I've never had the pleasure of describing a player on one of my teams produce a triple-double. Scratch that one off my 'bucket list' as sophomore point guard Lindsey Moore made history by becoming the first Husker, male or female, to get a triple-double in NU's 73-57 win over Florida A&M. Moore finished with 12 points and career highs of 11 assists and 10 rebounds.
Freshman forward Jordan Hooper led all scorers with 20 points, while senior center Catheryn Redmon added her sixth career double-double and third of the season with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Now the Huskers look towards their final season of Big 12 Conference play when they host 19th-ranked Oklahoma Saturday afternoon at 2:05 p.m.
Oklahoma went to their third Final Four in school history last season and enters Saturday's game with a 10-3 record. OU lost their final non-conference game Sunday at TCU 76-69. The Sooners only other losses were at then-No. 6 Ohio State and then-undefeated Arkansas.
Oklahoma returns one of the best backcourts in the nation. 5-9 senior point guard Danielle Robinson was one of five players named to the Associated Press pre-season All-American team. She also is on the watch list for the Wooden, Wade, Naismith, and Lowe's Senior CLASS awards. She leads the team in scoring (18.6 ppg) and steals.
Guard Whitney Hand, a 6-1 sophomore, played in her first game in 401 days last Sunday at TCU. The 2009 Big 12 Freshman of the Year has been out since tearing an ACL on Nov. 27, 2009. She had a career-high 24 points and added 11 rebounds in 37 minutes in a losing effort against TCU.
Morgan Hook, a 5-10 freshman guard, leads the team in three-pointers (39) and is third on the team in scoring (11.4 ppg). Hook drew the start against TCU over 5-7 freshman guard Aaryn Ellenberg. Ellenberg had previously started every game on the season and is second on the team in scoring (16.3 ppg) and second in three-pointers (37). 6-1 senior forward Carlee Roethlisberger is one of three OU players to start every game this season. The sister of Pittsburgh Steeler quarterback Ben, Roethlisberger averages 6.4 ppg.
Joanna McFarland, a 6-2 sophomore center, rounds out Oklahoma's probable starting lineup. She has started all 13 games, leads the team in rebounding (8.9 ppg) and averages 8.5 ppg. Her older sisters both played collegiately in the Big 12 against the Huskers; Jessica at Kansas State and Jackie at Colorado.
Oklahoma Head Coach Sherri Coale is in her 15th season with the Sooners and has won more Big 12 Conference games than any other coach. Coale's OU teams have won six Big 12 regular-season titles and have advanced to the NCAA Final Four three times, including each of the past two seasons.
Oklahoma leads the all-time series with Nebraska 26-23, but the Huskers emerged victorious in the last meeting. NU's 80-64 win in Norman on Feb. 24, 2010 clinched Nebraska's first Big 12 regular-season title.
