Huskers Head to Hoosier-Land for Big Ten/Big 12 Challenge
It's always such a joy to see what talents the incoming freshman have and how they will contribute to the team. Tuesday night's Husker Women's Basketball 65-41 win over UNLV saw one of the freshmen blossom in a major way. 5-9 guard Kellie McCann-Smith erupted for a career-high 16 points and connected on 4-of-6 three point attempts. Two-time Big 12 Freshman of the Week Jordan Hooper became the fastest Husker in history to reach 100 points. She had 14 of her game-high 16 points in the first half to help Nebraska remain undefeated at 6-0. NU hits the road for the Big Ten/Big 12 challenge when they face the Indiana Hoosiers in Bloomington Sunday morning.
Indiana is 4-3 on the season and is riding a two-game win streak after a 65-51 win at Clemson Thursday night. After knocking off Ball State and St. Bonaventure to start the season, the Hoosiers lost three straight games to Memphis, Georgia and St. Louis before defeating Cleveland State last week.
5-9 senior guard and All-American candidate Jori Davis leads IU in scoring (17.1 ppg) and rebounding (7.6 rpg) The 2010 Second Team-All Big Ten honoree is 19th all-time in scoring in Indiana history. She has scored in double-figures 12 games in a row dating back to last season, including a 17 in the win at Clemson. Davis set a new school record and the second highest mark in Big Ten women's basketball history by connecting on 17 free-throws on 18 attempts against Cleveland State on November 28.
Indiana's probable starting lineup includes four seniors, including 6-1 forward Hope Elam. She is second on the team in scoring 13.4 ppg and leads the team in three-pointers (14). Elam had scored in double-figures every game this season prior to her nine-point effort at Clemson. 5-7 senior point guard Whitney Lindsay is the only Hoosier to start every game this season. She leads the team in steals (21) and leads the Big Ten Conference in steals per game (3.0). Lindsay had eight points and game highs of six assists and four steals in the win at Clemson. She is third on the team in scoring (8.7 ppg) and leads the team in assists. 6-2 junior forward Danilsa Andujar has started all but one game this season and leads the team in blocked shots (7). She had a career high eight points at Clemson and averages 3.9 ppg and 3.9 rpg on the season. 5-8 senior guard Andrea McGuirt averages 4.6 ppg. She had six points and a career-high tying eight rebounds against Clemson.
Fifth-year Hoosier Head coach Felisha Legette-Jack came to IU after leading Hofstra for four seasons. She has an overall collegiate record of 129-122 and is 75-59 as the head coach at Indiana.
With forcing 23 Clemson turnovers, Indiana has caused 20 or more opponent turnovers in every game this season. IU also held Clemson to the lowest-percentage shooting of any opponent they've faced this season, 31.0%. The Hoosiers are forcing a Big Ten leading 22.8 turnovers per game and are grabbing a conference best 11.1 steals per contest. IU has forced 20 or more opponent mistakes in every game this season, including a season-best 31 turnovers in a loss against St. Louis.
Nebraska and Indiana have only met once. The Hoosiers won an 83-80 overtime decision in Lincoln on November 26, 1994.
