Huskers Return Home to Meet Mavs
After traveling to a 'winter wonderland' in southeastern Washington, the 20th-ranked Nebraska Women's Basketball team found the conditions indoors much more to their liking, especially offensively, and the Huskers defeated the home standing Washington State Huskies 87-79 Monday night. 6-3 senior center Catheryn Redmon had a career high 17 points, hitting 8-of-11 shots from the field and added 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the year and fifth of her career. Big 12 Player of the Week Dominique Kelley continued her blistering free throw shooting, hitting 8-of-9 to improve to 39-of-42 on the young season. She added 16 points and became the 26th Husker in history to reach the 1,000-point plateau in their career. NU returns home for the Thanksgiving holiday and will face Nebraska-Omaha Friday morning in Lincoln.
UNO is 2-0 on the season, with wins over York College and at Missouri S&T. 6-0 junior forward Heather Pohl leads the Mavericks in scoring and rebounding after two games. She had a career-high 24 points in the 61-52 win over Missouri S&T last Thursday. The Millard West graduate and former first-team all-stater averages 16.5 ppg and 6.0 rpg and leads the team with five three-pointers. 5-4 sophomore guard Jamie Nash is second on the team in scoring with 12.0 ppg. As a freshman, Nash was named to the MIAA All-Defensive Team after starting in 24 games. She was the team leader in steals with 81 on the season. 5-6 sophomore guard Jessica Zaruba is third on the team in scoring (9.0 ppg). She was part of a class C-1 state title team her junior year for Norfolk High School. 6-0 sophomore Paige Fraudendorfer leads the team in minutes played (30.5 mpg), but has struggled to make only 3-of-25 of her field goal attempts. She was a first-team all-state selectee at Humphrey High School as a prepster. 6-1 junior Jasamine Reeves rounds out UNO's probable starting lineup. She averages 3.0 ppg.I cordially invite you to join Jeff Griesch and me for Nebraska Women's Basketball on the Husker Sports Network.
