It was an exciting game with a heart stopping finish and also the closest home game Nebraska has experienced in quite some time. The Huskers' 64-63 win over Saint Mary's Saturday afternoon was NU's third consecutive win over a 2009-10 post-season team and showed that this young team has a lot of character rallying in the second half for a come-from-behind win.
Senior guard Dominique Kelley celebrated her 22nd birthday with a game-high 22 points, including a perfect 13-for-13 at the free throw line. Six of Kelley's clutch free throws came in the final 25 seconds. It was the second-best free throw performance in Husker history, just one shy of Laura Tietjen's 14-for-14 effort against UNLV in 1977.
With the win, Nebraska stretched its regular-season winning streak to 34 games and its home winning streak to 23, but Saint Mary's snapped NU's streak of double-digit margin wins at home at 19. Next up for the Huskers is a trip to the Pacific Northwest to face the Washington State Cougars on Monday night.
Nebraska will be WSU's first home opponent this season. The Cougars are 0-3 after dropping road games at Saint Mary's (73-69), UC-Davis (77-38) and Portland (91-80). Four starters return from last year's team that finished 8-22 overall and 3-15 in the Pac-10. However, the point guard position finds a new starter. With last year's freshman standout KiKi Moore transferring to Fresno State and junior April Cook out indefinitely with lower back pain, 5-5 junior college transfer Rosetta Adzasu will start at the point.
Adzasu won a national JUCO title with Central Arizona in 2009 and played at Yakima County Community College last year, leading them to the national title game. She had a team-high 20 points in the loss at Portland Thursday night. She leads the team in scoring (12.3 ppg), steals and assists. 6-1 freshman wing Sage Romberg is second on the team in scoring (11.0 ppg). She leads the team in three-pointers (3-13) and adds 4.7 rpg. Romberg had a team-high 19 points in the season-opening loss at Saint Mary's. 5-10 junior guard Jazmine Perkins scored five points and grabbed six rebounds against Nebraska in Lincoln last year. She is third on the team in scoring (8.7 ppg). 6-5 sophomore center Carly Noyes (pronounced NOISE) leads the team in blocked shots (10) and adds 8.0 ppg and 4.0 rpg. Rounding out Washington State's probable starting lineup will either be 6-2 freshman forward Hana Potter or 6-1 freshman wing Brandi Thomas. Potter leads the team in rebounding (6.7 rpg) and adds 7.7 ppg. Thomas adds 2.0 ppg.
Veteran WSU Head Coach June Daugherty is in her fourth season of trying to turn around the Cougar program. She has a record of 24-69 at Washington State, but has a career record of 338-279 in 22 seasons, including stints at Boise State and Washington.
The Huskers lead the all-time series with Washington State 3-0. Last year in Lincoln, NU routed the Cougars 107-54. Six Huskers scored in double figures, including Dominique Kelley's 13 points and Harleen Sidhu's career high 10. In Nebraska's only previous visit to Pullman, Heather Kephart hit four consecutive three-pointers in the second half and finished the game with 15 points on five threes as NU rallied from a seven-point second-half deficit to defeat WSU 64-56 on December 4, 2003.
