Nebraska junior safety Austin Cassidy has been named to the ESPN Academic All-District 7 football team, announced Thursday by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Cassidy was named to the team for the second consecutive year and the spot on the all-district team places Cassidy on the ESPN Academic All-America ballot. The academic All-America team will be announced on Nov. 23.
A graduate of Lincoln Southwest, Cassidy carries a 3.88 cumulative grade-point average in psychology. In addition to being an academic All-District pick in 2009, Cassidy was also a first-team academic All-Big 12 selection last season, and is a six-time Big 12 Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll pick.
On the field, Cassidy earned his first career start at safety last Saturday against Missouri and responded well with six tackles in the Huskers' 31-17 victory. He has 14 total tackles on the season. Cassidy has been a special teams leader for Nebraska the past two seasons, starting on four special teams units this year.
Originally a walk-on to the program, Cassidy was placed on scholarship prior to the start of the 2010 season.
