San Antonio, Texas - Steffi Neisen began pursuit of her second straight top-10 finish with an opening-round 74 to close the first round of the Alamo Invitational on Sunday.
Neisen, a freshman from New Prague, Minn., closed the first 18 holes in a tie for 10th on the par-72, 6,302-yard layout of the Briggs Ranch Golf Club. Her two-over-par 74 was just one stroke off her collegiate career-best, which she set in NU's last competition at the Dale McNamara Invitational (Oct. 11-13) in Owasso, Okla.
Neisen, who owns a pair of top-20 finishes through her first four college tournaments, led the Huskers to a ninth-place team standing after the first day of the three-day event in San Antonio. NU produced an opening-round total of 306, to trail first-place Colorado by 15 strokes. TCU was just three strokes back of the Buffaloes at 294, while Texas A&M closed the first round in third place with a 296.
Colorado's Emily Talley and TCU's Brooke Beeler sit atop the individual leaderboard after scorching the Briggs Ranch course with rounds of five-under-par 67 on Sunday afternoon. They were the only two golfers to produce rounds better than par, as five other golfers tied for third with even-par 72s.
Fellow freshmen Remylee Molyneux and Katelyn Wright, along with junior Kayla Knopik all notched rounds of 77 to head into Monday's second round in a tie for 36th, while junior Madeleine Sheils added a 78 to sit in a tie for 45th. Junior Katie Keiser rounded out the NU lineup with an 80 (tied for 58th).
Nebraska returns to the course on Monday at 11 a.m. The Huskers will play the tournament's second 18 holes, before playing the final round on Tuesday beginning with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.
