Lincoln---The Nebraska football team returned to the practice field on Wednesday, after taking the previous two days off from practice. The Huskers, who are next in action on Thursday, Oct. 7 at Kansas State, practiced for a little more than two hours in full pads on the Ed and Joyanne Gass Practice Fields northeast of Memorial Stadium. Head coach Bo Pelini said the extra days off have been beneficial for the Huskers.
"I think it's big," Pelini said. "I almost decided to bring them back a day early and practice a little bit, but we have an eight-week stretch here coming up. I thought it was the right time. I thought we were a little leg weary last week at practice. It gave them a mental break and a physical break. I thought it showed today. It was a good, hard practice. It was much like we did in camp. It was a good day."
Although the Huskers finished their non-conference schedule with an unblemished 4-0 record, Pelini noted after Wednesday's practice that the staff has used those games to get an idea of where the team is headed for the rest of the season.
"We've made the corrections all along," Pelini said. "We took a pretty good hard look at the last game and got their attention, but you have to look at the whole body of work. It gave us a chance to, offensively and defensively, self-scout ourselves, and make some decision on where we want to go going forward scheme wise, personnel wise, everything. It's been a productive week for us."
Also after Wednesday's practice, Pelini gave some initial thoughts the Kansas State Wildcats. The Bill Snyder coached team will enter the Thursday night matchup with the Huskers with a 4-0 record, including a 1-0 mark in Big 12 play after defeating Iowa State in the season's third week.
"They are a good football team," Pelini said. "They are well coached. They are physical. They are good team. It will be a real challenge on the road. We're looking forward to it."
NU will return to the practice field for a scheduled workout on Thursday before taking the day off on Friday. The Huskers will then begin their normal game week preparations on Saturday. The Kansas State and Nebraska game is set to kick off from Manhattan, Kan., on Thursday, Oct. 7, at 6:30 p.m. on ESPN.
