Lincoln - Nebraska Coach Connie Yori and the Huskers celebrated an early tip-off to the 2010-11 season with the Fastbreakers Annual Sneak Peek Luncheon at the Holiday Inn Downtown in Lincoln on Sunday.
A crowd of nearly 400 Fastbreakers booster club members and Nebraska women's basketball alumni joined Yori, the entire Nebraska coaching staff and all 14 of the current Huskers at Sunday's luncheon, which was emceed by the voice of Husker women's basketball - Matt Coatney.
Husker great Maurtice Ivy was honored at the event. The 1988 Big Eight Player of the Year and the No. 2 scorer in Nebraska women's basketball history, Ivy was recognized by the Fastbreakers for her upcoming jersey retirement. Ivy, who powered the Huskers to the 1988 Big Eight regular-season title, will have her jersey formally retired at Nebraska's nationally televised game with Kansas on Sunday, Jan. 16 at the Devaney Center.
Ivy, who scored 2,131 points in her career while capturing first-team All-Big Eight accolades on three occasions, said she was deeply honored at the thought of her jersey retirement. Now the head coach at Peru State in Nebraska, Ivy said she hopes her entire team will be able to attend the ceremony at the Devaney Center so she can share the moment with them.
Nebraska's all-time leading scorer and 1992 Wade Trophy winner Karen Jennings spoke on behalf of all the former Husker alums in recognition of Ivy's achievement.
Coach Connie Yori, a contemporary of Ivy's on the court while a player and assistant coach at Creighton, mentioned that Yori was charged with the task of "being Maurtice Ivy" during CU's scouts to play Nebraska, when Yori was an assistant at Creighton.
After Ivy's recognition, Yori introduced the 14 members of the 2010-11 Nebraska women's basketball team to the crowd. Each player mentioned one unique thing about themselves to the crowd, before Yori gave a brief scouting report on each player. Senior center Jessica Periago, a native of Toulon, France, also addressed the crowd on behalf of the players.
Nebraska officially opens the 2010-11 season with an exhibition game against Pittsburg State on Sunday, Oct. 31. Tip-off at the Devaney Center is at 2:05 p.m.
