#6 Nebraska 17, South Dakota State 3
Saturday, Sept. 25, 2010
Memorial Stadium (Lincoln, Neb.)
On his thoughts on the game
"I thought our attention, our practices were good. We still had mistakes obviously. But I said going in, we still made too many mistakes. We hurt ourselves and our execution is not as good. It's a work in progress. Obviously, I'm not pushing the panic button because this is the same football team that went out to Washington last week and played pretty good football. You have to have consistency. For us to show up like that at home today, I'm embarrassed. Like I said, it's my fault."
On if he thought the Huskers matched South Dakota State's intensity
"No, I don't think they did. At times I thought we did, but I thought they outplayed us. They out-hit us, they flew around with more passion than we did. For us to walk out of our stadium after playing like that, I'm embarrassed."
On why South Dakota State gave Taylor Martinez such a hard time
"He made bad decisions, he didn't execute. He didn't execute the offense the way he has been. Why? I don't know. He is a young guy who didn't respond very well. He didn't have a very good day. It goes well beyond the quarterback position, I promise you. I could also say this, we didn't make enough adjustments. It was pretty much a team effort in being a bad football team today. That comes squarely back to the head coach."
On if they were paying more attention to Martinez, which gave him trouble
"It was nothing different than what we've seen. They did a good job, don't get me wrong."
On if he was surprised about South Dakota State's ability to hammer it with the running game
"No, that was our guys not executing, guys missing gaps."
On how he is feeling
"I'm disappointed. I'm disappointed."
On if there was any apprehension to take out Taylor Martinez
"If someone is not playing their best football, it's going to go to the next guy. That's the same guy who has played very well in his first three weeks. He had a tough game. I can promise you the guys around him didn't do anything to make it any better, and we as coaches sure as heck didn't do a good job of helping the guy."
On Lavonte David having 19 tackles
"Lavonte David might have had 19 tackles, he has a lot to fix. It goes well beyond statistics."
On what they do with the team on the off-week
"I don't want to talk about that right now. We should be pretty fresh, we had a day off today."
On the status of Mike McNeill and Eric Martin
"He's (McNeill) fine. I don't know how Eric Martin is, I haven't seen him."
On if he is happy with the defense
"No, at times I was. We gave them some yards and didn't execute. We held them to three points and we should have."
On his disappointment
"I always believe when you walk out there you're going to get better or you're going to get worse. We got worse today. I call it as I see it. I'm not going to try and paint a picture that is different. A lot of the same things that came out today were things that reach out and grab you in practice. When the errors aren't being corrected and people aren't making adjustments and are repeating their errors, that's a problem. It will reach up and get you. Across the board we just didn't execute, forget about everything else. We didn't take the field and do what we're coached to do. We didn't execute our offense, for a lot of times we didn't execute defensively. It all comes down to our football team wasn't ready to play for whatever reason. That comes squarely back to the guy in charge. I take responsibility."
