Lincoln - A trio of weather delays caused a slowdown at the Nebraska women's golf team's season-opening Chip-N Club Invitational at Wilderness Ridge on Monday.
Nebraska closed the opening round in a tie for 11th at 314, while the University of Texas-San Antonio produced the top round over the first 18 holes with a 294. The Road Runners held a five stroke lead over second-place Kansas State, while Kansas was just one shot back in third at 300.
True freshman Katelyn Wright, playing as an individual outside of Nebraska's lineup, produced the best opening round for the Huskers with a two-over-par 74 to sit in a tie for ninth place.
Another true freshman, Steffi Neisen, led the Huskers' top five with a four-over-par 76, to close the first 18 holes in a tie for 19th.
UTSA's Taylor Newlin fired a two-under-par 70 to take the lead at the end of the opening round, one shot in front of defending Chip-N Club champion Amy Anderson from North Dakota State. Anderson produced the only other individual round better than par with her one-under 71.
Soon after the completion of the opening round, severe weather began to take control on the 6,238-yard, par-72 layout at Wilderness Ridge.
A brief, early afternoon lightning delay forced players off the course for approximately 45 minutes. After the delay, the golfers returned to the course for approximately five holes before lightning and heavy rains again caused a delay of more than one hour.
The golfers found another break in the weather at approximately 5:15 and golfers were able to get approximately three more holes in before a massive front from the north caused a nearly 15-degree drop in temperatures in less than 30 minutes.
The golfers were called off the course again at 5:35 p.m. and play was suspended until Tuesday morning, when the second round will resume. With overnight rains in the forecast, play was set to begin at 9 a.m. (originally scheduled for 8:30 a.m.).
