Huskers Battle Through Heat, Third Practice of Fall Camp

The Nebraska football team conducted a 2 1/2-hour practice in helmets and shorts on the Ed and Joyanne Gass practice fields outside of the Hawks Championship Center on Monday. In temperatures that hovered over 100 degrees, the Huskers battled through the heat in their third practice of fall camp.

"It's just about fighting through it, mental toughness," Head Coach Bo Pelini said. "It's not easy when you go out in heat like that, but our guys did fine. It shows how good of condition they're in and how good of a job our strength crew did."

Pelini spoke briefly about the routine in which they conduct practices. With a deep team and a mix of young and old players, the staff has been cautious in how they teach fundamentals and install their system in a way that benefits everyone.

"I think things are going in a little bit easier," Pelini said. "The players are a little more advanced in their knowledge of the system. It's good for the older guys, not so good for the younger guys because we're a little more aggressive in our installment. Our younger guys are doing fine. We've been using two groups in our teamwork. It works out good, we're getting a good mix of getting the older guys reps and getting the younger guys taught."

Earlier today, senior Prince Amukamara and junior Jared Crick were both named to the watch list for the Chuck Bednarik Award, while senior running back Roy Helu claimed a spot on the Maxwell Award watch list. Even with such talent on the team, Pelini noted that every player has something to improve upon.

"There have been a lot of guys who have been impressive," Pelini said. "To a man there is not a guy on our football team who does not have corrections or improvements to make. It's the third day and you're not going to have it all figured out and accomplished in three days. As a football team, we're getting better on a daily basis and that is all you can ask for right now."

The Huskers will practice again on Tuesday afternoon as they progress through the first week of fall camp.
