Belfonte Named First-Team Academic All-District

Lincoln - Senior DJ Belfonte was honored Thursday, as he was named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-Distict VII team.  The center fielder from Kansas City, Mo., is enjoying his best season to date, hitting .373 with six homers, 34 RBIs and 10 stolen bases. He ranks among the Big 12 leaders in hits (66, eighth), triples (3, third) and batting average (10th) and has totaled 20 multi-hit games in 44 contests. 

He enters this weekend's series with Southeast Missouri State ranked in 14th in school history in hits (222) and 12th in games played (208) and ranks fourth in conference history as he has been hit by 57 pitches in his career.

In the classroom, Belfonte, who will graduate this weekend with a degree in finance, has a 3.72 GPA and is a two-time first-team Academic All-Big 12 selection. He has been on the Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll all seven semesters at Nebraska and was a nominee for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award this season.  This is the second time Belfonte has been first-team Academic All-District VII, earning the honor as a sophomore in 2008.

He will now advance to the national ballot, and look to increase Nebraska's NCAA leading total of 271 CoSIDA Academic All-Americans.
