Lincoln - Nebraska forward Molly Thomas has been invited to Corvallis, Ore., to take part in the U.S. Under-23 Women's National Team training camp from April 18-25. Head Coach Bill Irwin will be evaluating 24 of the top collegiate players in the nation as Thomas and the U.S. take on Oregon State University and the University of Portland during the week-long camp.
A native of Omaha, Neb., Thomas is a two-time All-Big 12 selection, earning All-Newcomer honors in 2008 and Second Team accolades in 2009. Last fall, she had the second-highest offensive totals for the Huskers, while ranking ninth in the conference in goals (8) and eighth in assists (6). Thomas ended the regular season on a strong note against Iowa State, scoring the tying goal with 18 minutes remaining and contributing the game-winning assist in overtime. She had three multiple-goal games in 2009, including an eight-point outburst on two goals and two assists against South Dakota on Sept. 18.
While Thomas travels to Oregon next week, teammate Morgan Marlborough is currently part of the U.S. Under-20 Women's National Team training camp in Carson, Calif. Marlborough has been with the U-20 national team since early January when she made the 20-player roster. The Lee's Summit, Mo., native helped the Americans to the 2010 CONCACAF Women's U-20 Championship in Guatemala and is attempting to make the final roster for the 2010 FIFA U-20 World Cup this summer in Germany. As a freshman last fall, Marlborough scored 21 goals for the Huskers and was named the 2009 Big 12 Offensive Player and Rookie of the Year.
The U.S. Under-20 and Under-23 squads are two-of-five youth national teams (also U-18, U-17 and U-15). Their progress is overlooked by U.S. Women's National Team head coach Pia Sundhage to evaluate upcoming college-aged players who can contribute to his team in future years.
The Huskers are currently wrapping up their 2010 spring schedule. Nebraska hosts its only home match of the spring season this Saturday when the Huskers host Minnesota at 9:30 a.m. The match will be part of the Husker Nation Pavilion festivities at the Nebraska Soccer Field, as the NU football team plays its annual Red-White Spring Game inside Memorial Stadium at 1 p.m. In the afternoon, Nebraska travels to Omaha to take on the Creighton Bluejays at 4:30 p.m.
