Lincoln - Nebraska's Kelsey Griffin earned another honor in a storied senior season when she was named to the U.S. National Select Team by USA Basketball on Thursday.
Griffin, a 6-2 forward from Eagle River, Alaska, will report to U.S. National Team Training Camp on April 14 and will be among a group of 10 elite collegiate players who will help the U.S. National Team prepare for upcoming events. It will be Griffin's first-ever appearance in the USA Basketball program.
Griffin earned first-team All-America honors after leading Nebraska to the best season in school history in 2009-10. Griffin averaged 20.1 points and 10.4 rebounds per game, while powering the Huskers to a 32-2 overall record and the school's first-ever Big 12 women's basketball title.
Griffin ranked among the top 25 players nationally in scoring, rebounding and field goal percentage, while shattering Nebraska's career, season and game free throw records for both makes and attemtps. The three-time first-team All-Big 12 selection also earned her first spot on the Big 12 All-Defensive Team after posting 60 steals, 26 blocks and a remarkable 29 charges drawn. She finished her senior season with 20 double-doubles to bring her career total to 40.
Off the court, Griffin was chosen as the winner of the 2010 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award and earned first-team academic All-Big 12 honors for the third time in her career.
Debbie Ryan and Dawn Staley will coach the U.S. National Select Team, which includes fellow Big 12 players Andrea Riley (Oklahoma State) and Danielle Robinson (Oklahoma), along with UConn's Kalana Greene, Florida State's Jacinta Monroe, Ohio State's Jantel Lavender, LSU's Allison Hightower, Stanford's Nnemkadi Ogwumike, Duke's Jasmine Thomas and Virginia's Monica Wright.
