Giller to Miss Remainder of 2010 Season

Lincoln - University of Nebraska baseball coach Mike Anderson announced following Wednesday's practice that Kurt Giller will miss the rest of the season with an elbow injury.

Giller, a freshman pitcher from Manhattan, Kan., underwent an MRI earlier this week and the results revealed a benign cyst on his right humerus. The cyst had caused an impending fracture in the humerus as well as ligament damage, which will require surgery.

"As unfortunate as we feel with Kurt's loss for this season, we are also very fortunate that our medical staff found the cyst in the MRI." Anderson said. "The cyst could have significantly weakened his humerus if we didn't find out about it and caused potential long-term damage. We are committed to Kurt, and we will work with our medical staff and his family to give him the best care possible in his rehabilitation process."

Giller has made eight appearances for the Huskers this season, going 0-1 in 13.2 innings of work. He was a three-year performer at Manhattan (Kan.) High School, going 15-5 with 1.38 ERA in his career, and held single-season (83 in 2009) and career (210) strikeout records at the school.

The Huskers return to action this weekend, as they travel to Manhattan, Kan., to begin a three-game series with Kansas State. Friday's first pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. and will be carried on the Husker Sports Network and Huskers.com.
