Lincoln - Nebraska women's basketball head coach Connie Yori captured another major award on Saturday, when she was named the 2010 Associated Press National Coach of the Year.
The award was formally announced on Saturday afternoon at the Alamodome during the open practice day at the 2010 NCAA Women's Final Four. Yori, who had already been named the Women's Basketball Coaches Association and U.S. Basketball Writers Association Coach of the Year, received 28 votes from the AP's 40-member media panel. Connecticut's Geno Auriemma finished second in voting with 10.
Yori, who just completed her eighth season at Nebraska and her 20th as a head coach, guided the Huskers to the best season in school history in 2009-10. Nebraska closed with a program-best 32-2 mark - nine more victories than any other team in NU history. The Huskers tied a Big 12 record with a 30-game winning streak and became the first Big 12 men's or women's team in history to complete an unbeaten regular season (29-0). NU also captured its first-ever Big 12 title, rolling to a perfect 16-0 mark.
Nebraska produced its first top-10 AP national rankings in school history, climbing as high as No. 3 in the polls before claiming the school's first-ever No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. The Huskers went on to their first-ever trip to the NCAA Sweet 16.
Not only did Nebraska produce one of the best seasons in the country in 2009-10, the Huskers were also one of the nation's most improved teams, gaining a remarkable 17 victories in the win column from their 2008-09 campaign (15-16).
Yori came to Nebraska in June of 2002 and inherited a Husker squad that was coming off back-to-back losing seasons. In her first year at NU in 2002-03, the Huskers managed an 8-20 record while playing at times with just five healthy scholarship players.
Since her first season, Nebraska has made a school-record seven consecutive postseason tournament trips, including NCAA Tournament bids in 2007, 2008 and 2010. She has led NU to three NCAA Tournament victories, surpassing the total of two NCAA Tournament victories in the history of Husker women's basketball before her arrival.
Yori has also made sure that the Huskers have achieved high marks in the classroom. Nebraska produced a 100 percent score in the Graduation Success Rate - one of just 19 teams in the 2010 NCAA Tournament to achieve a perfect mark. Nebraska also led the Big 12 with six first-team academic All-Big 12 selections in 2009-10.
